Her name is Deb Haaland and she is going to do amazing things for Indian Country.
President-elect Joe Biden has just introduced Representative Deb Haaland as the first Native American Cabinet secretary and head of the Interior Department. This choice makes a clear statement that the government is placing a priority on not only environmental issues but also in establishing a much-overdue, collaborative relationship with Indigenous people all across America.

Haaland tweeted, “A voice like mine has never been a Cabinet secretary or at the head of the Department of Interior. I’ll be fierce for all of us, our planet, and all of our protected land (CNN).
The personal struggles that Rep. Haaland went through as a child and as a single mother to her own children, have given her the perspective to help others in those situations. She attributes her success to those who came before her who sacrificed everything to teach her about who she is and about the culture she is so proud of.

Some pertinent issues Haaland and Biden intend on tackling together are:
- Environmental justice
- Environmental racism
- Green energy
- Climate change
On Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi gave her blessing to Haaland.
“Congresswoman Deb Haaland is one of the most respected and one of the best Members of Congress I have served with. I am so proud that, as one of the first Native American women to have served in Congress, she serves as Chair of the Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands. Congresswoman Haaland knows the territory, and if she is the President-elect’s choice for Interior Secretary, then he will have made an excellent choice.”
These are exciting times; lots of changes are being made in the nation, most that are well-deserved and that will hopefully bring people together instead of pulling people apart. Within the next few months, we should all start to see some of these changes in action and the benefits that we will reap from Rep. Haaland in office.

says:Deb Haaland was chosen by President Biden to head the Dept. of the Interior. His choices were then presented to the Senate for approval. Did the Senate approve her appointment? I was so moved by her being chosen by Biden, but have not heard if it sailed through the Senate. Thank you for your generous sharing of information to all of us.
