I've said it before and I'll say it again. There are sure are a lot of creative Natives out there! Check out these cool haircuts from the Smooth Scalper Barber group.
Cool right?
The Smooth Scalper Barbers group was created by Savoy Fog In The Morning (Lakota/Crow) whose goal was not only to give haircuts but to inspire the Native communities they visit, especially the youth!
“Our goal is to show the youth that talent can come in different formations and to use the gift god gave us to show case or inspire. Growing up on the reservation we were stuck into thinking we only have a few choices in what life has to offer us. But we're here to show our communities that we can be what ever we want and start something new and different. We took barbering and art and created a movement.”
There are currently three barbers on staff including Savoy who has been cutting hair for 19 years. Marlon Joe (Crow/Navajo) has been cutting hair for 19 years and proudly served in the military. Christian Iron Shield (Lakota from Standing Rock Sioux) has been cutting hair for 6 years now.
Although they currently have no storefront, they plan to have one in the future. Right now they are traveling the plains area setting up at pow wows, basketball tournaments and any other community gatherings. Their home base is in Crow Agency, Montana.
“We started doing our barber booth last year at the Crow Native Days Pow Wow which is in June and from there we just been hitting whatever gathering we can. We also give free haircuts to our local schools at the beginning of the school year.”
So where can you find these barbers this year? Be on the lookout for them to hit up the Crow Native Days Pow Wow again this June, the 4th of July Pow Wow in Lame Deer, Montana, Rocky Boy Pow Wow, Little Shell Pow Wow in New Town, ND in August, Crow Fair, United Tribes Pow Wow in North Dakota and Black Hills Pow Wow in Rapid City, South Dakota.
And if you read this in time, they plan on setting up this weekend at the 48th Annual MSUB Powwow, April 8-9, 2016, which is held in the Alterowitz Gym on the Montana State University Billings campus.
