Navajo Kindergartner Sent Home First Day of School For Having Long Hair

Posted By Toyacoyah Brown August 28th, 2014 Last Updated on: August 14th, 2016

“Malachi was excited to start school all summer long. After we had enrolled him he was excited, everyday it was the question, ‘mom are we going to school?’” said Malachi’s mother, April Wilson.

Excited about his first day of school, Malachi walked into the doors of F.J. Young Elementary only to be told he couldn’t attend because his hair was too long.

Never mind that their mascot has long hair! And the town they live in is also named after the Seminole Indians. Watch more of the story from CBS 7 News:

Poor Malachi! At least they finally let him attend school, but I have a feeling there may be more battles ahead for this family. Stay strong!

And this from a nation where the pc police are every where!
We are told that we are a nation of tolerance. Apparently that doesn’t include Native Americans!

NDN will live forever!

this is the only place in the world where a Native American Indian still has to prove they are an Indian. Does a WHITE person have to prove he or she is white? Same goes for a Black person, or Mexican……..

School administrator(s) should be fired and civil rights charges brought up. I thought that sort of thing stopped a long time ago. Guess some forms of racism never stop. That school should be very embarrassed.

So let me get this straight, the mother had the simple task of providing paperwork for the exemption, which she did not do, and because of her lack of responsibility she wants to blame the school for her son’s first day? She took care of her responsibility, and behold he is able to come back.

She also ask how does explain to a five year old that he was turned away for what he believes in. How about she explain to her son it was her fault because she did not read the handbook, and have all the paperwork done. Her son is getting an exception based on what he believes, not penalized.

Meg

What exemption are you talking about?! It is a basic human right! How far are you going with your racism Americans? I am so ashamed of you as a European citizen (because you are one of us by your roots). Others dislike us because of you and your racist behavior!!! They think we are all as bad as you are. As long as a child looks clean and decent it is none of your business what they wear and what they believe in as someone might want to keep it personal and they have the right to do so. Start respecting others cultures and customs, and learn about them (even if you do not have yours) because they are part of each nation’s identity! Especially if you live in a country where these traditions have been practiced for thousands of years…….

THIS IS SAD….. COMPLAIN THAT HAIR IS TOO LONG BUT GO TO FOOD ESTABLISHMENT TO EAT AND SEE PEOPLE WITH TROUSERS BELOW THEIR ASSES .. WHO ENJOYS SEEING SOMEONES UNDER WEAR.. EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK ASSES ARE HANGING OUT ABOVE THEIR TROUSERS AND THIS HAS BECOME AMERICAN TRADITION….
AT LEAST THEIR IS PRIDE IN NATIVE AMERICAN TRADITION AND CULTURE….. AMERICA HAS MANY OTHER THINGS THAT THEY NEED TO CORRECT BEFORE THEY TRY TO TACKLE SOMEONES HAIR LENGTH !!!

NORMA

THIS IS NOT RIGHT…. HE DESERVES THE RIGHT TO HAVE HIS HAIR AT ANY LENGTH AS LONG AS IT IS CLEAN AND PROPERLY TAKEN CARE OF…
SOCIETY NOW ALLOW PEOPLE TO WEAR THEIR PANTS BELOW THEIR ASS SHOWING OFF THEIR UNDER SHORTS WHICH IS A LOT WORSE THAN ANY ONE HAVING LONG HAIR….
THE AMERICAN INDIANS HAVE LOST SO MUCH AND STILL SOCIETY Wants to take and control more and everyone wants to cry out that Police Lives Matter or Black Lives Matter but what about this cry: NATIVE AMERICAN LIVES AND CULTURE MATTERS ALSO….

The school better quick cite a section of the dress code referring to a hair length that’s allowable and pertains to both boys and girls. Everything is NOT suddenly okay just because they let Malachi in the next day. Something is VERY wrong here and I predict other incidents reflective of a bias in that school system will follow. Heads up, April.

Karen

This doesn’t make sense to me. Most kids are required to register for school in advance. A child that excited to attend school would surely have gone with his parent to the registration and any questions regarding the length of his hair should have been addressed at that time. Was this someone who wanted to make an issue of his hair length. It seems to have been resolved quickly. If you’re looking for a problem it’s not that hard to find them.

That way ,people go back to :kill the indian save the man, shame of you ,school staff.

I hope they sue that school. That’s not only unconstitutional but it’s wrong on so many levels. If someone reads this, has the resources, and can get into contact with that family, please help them do it.
