2020 Native American Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Posted By Toyacoyah Brown April 27th, 2020 Last Updated on: April 28th, 2020

Hello everyone! We're back once again with our annual gift guide.

For most of us this year, Mother’s Day will be celebrated a little differently. With most of the nation on stay-at-home orders, we might not be able to make an in-person visit to our moms, grandmas, and other family members for this special day.

But, that doesn’t mean we can’t still honor and thank them for all of their support over the years. We can still send a card, call, or send a special gift through the mail.

To help inspire you, I’ve rounded up some gift ideas I think the wonderful women in your life will enjoy.

Spa Day

All moms deserve a spa day, but especially this year. We have moms on the frontlines right now, moms working from home, moms becoming homeschool teachers overnight, all while trying to keep the household running smoothly.

Give Mom a much-needed break and let her relax!

Gift Set from Bison Star Naturals – $50.00

This gift set comes from a Native owned and family operated body care company in Taos, New Mexico. All their products are made with organically, naturally and locally sourced ingredients, only the best for mom! It comes with a handy tote so Mom can toss it in a purse or travel bag. Choose from Sage Pine or Lavender scent.

Contains:

  • 1 Bison Star Tote Bag
  • 1 8oz Lotion
  • 1 2oz Lotion
  • 1 Bison Star Soap Bar
  • 2 Stickers
  • 2 Seasonal Postcards

Sweetgrass Self-Care Set by Mother Earth Essentials – $75.00

This next spa day gift set comes from a Canadian indigenous-owned company, Mother Earth Essentials. They create luxurious bath and beauty products from natural ingredients and traditional recipes.

• Sweetgrass Hand & Body Lotion – 125 ml / 4.2 oz
• Sweetgrass Aromatherapy Candle – 170 g / 6 oz

Check out their website for other scents, including Cedar or Sage.

Shima Red Rose Soap from Nizhoni Soaps – $10

Straight from the Navajo Nation comes a soap that smells like fresh cut roses with rose petals infused into it! “My great-grandma Roseanne used to have a beautiful rose bush in her front yard and this soap just reminds me of how those rose bushes use to smell! The rose petals inside the soap bring a beautiful aesthetic to the bar with an amazing lather as well.” Comes in a 3 oz. bar size.

Check out their other scents as well!

Bamboo Hand & Face Spa Towels by Nicole La Rock – $21.85

Mom will need some nice towels after her spa treatment. Check out this adorable hummingbird print from Coast Salish artist Nicole La Rock. Set includes one bamboo face towel (16″x16″) and one hand towel (16″x28″).

Green Thumb Mom

Does your mom love to garden and spend time outside? Perhaps you can get her this gardening set, also designed by Nicole La Rock.

Hummingbird Garden Gift Sets by Nicole La Rock – $18.40
Made from one-piece aluminum, this garden set includes a hand trowel and fork with the lovely hummingbird design from Nicole La Rock.

Hummingbird Enamel Plant Pot by Nicole La Rock – $17.25

Sure, you can buy mom some fresh flowers, but why not get her some flowers that last? Better yet, get her a cute flowerpot to go with it! This plant pot has the same cute hummingbird pattern with enamel coating and stainless-steel rim. Measures 4.5″ w x 4.75″ h.

Across the Miles Mom

Pueblo Design Glass Picture Frame from Shumakolowa – $ 16.00

If your mom doesn’t get to see all her favorite smiling faces as often as she likes, make sure you send her a bunch of photos to tide her over. Even better, put them in a really nice frame, like this one from Shumakolowa. This frame is designed for a 4” x 6” print and measures 7” by 8¾”.

Glam Mom

Burgundy Throwover from Our Indigenous Traditions – $29.99
Perfect for throwing over your shoulders on cool nights. A great accessory to any outfit! Made from chiffon and comes in sizes Small to 3XL.

Sovereign Nation Sunrise Chiffon Scarf from 49 Dzine – $35.65

Let mom add a little sass and style to her outfit with this colorful print. Made from 100% polyester, in size 50″x 50″.

Wampum Oval Bracelet by Little Tree Wampum – $58.00

Simply gorgeous and made with love! This hand-crafted piece of jewelry is made with wampum from fresh uncooked shell that the artist harvests from the Pawtuxet estuary region of Narragansett Bay.

“The method I use to give my wampum the high mirror like finish which is essentially the same process that was handed to me from my mother and can only be accomplished by hand finishing and not by mass produced tumbling. When tumbled the surface of the shell or stone is imperfect because the aggregate wares it imperfectly causing unevenness on the microscopic level and so the light when reflected is scattered and causes an unsharp finish. The shell I use is uncooked because when the quahog is cooked to open it, it loses its rich color, and creates hairline fractures which weakens it.”

Feather and Shell Delux Gift Set from Beyond Buckskin – $112.00

You can always count on high-quality and unique gifts from Beyond Buckskin! This gift set includes their Miigis Shell Bracelet, Shell drop earrings, and large zipper pouch with wristlet. The bracelet features a cowry shell dipped in silver on an adjustable bracelet. The earrings measure 2.5″ long, and the pouch features an original ribbon skirt design by Judy Azure. The large bag measures 12″x8″. Includes jewelry pouch and jewelry box.

Turquoise and gold fringe earrings by Only Child Handicrafts – $90.00

Proudly made in traditional Coast Salish territory on Canada’s west coast! These handwoven beaded earrings are made with Japanese delica beads. Finished with raw brass elements. Measures .75” wide, and 4” long.

Kingman Turquoise Heart Necklace from byNEEKO – $100.00

Masks
Last but not least, here’s something that we’re all needing these days.

If you’re going to wear a cloth mask, might as well make it a fashionable one. Plus, a lot of these native artisans are also donating masks to worthy communities, charities, and hospitals. Make sure you check their website for availability. They're doing this without the help of big factories, so please be patient!
