Explore Tocabe: Where Every Meal Tells the Story of Indigenous Heritage

Over 15 years ago, the founders of Tocabe: An American Indian Eatery are on a mission to share their knowledge and passion for the Indigenous culture through food. They also have a desire to make these foods more accessible to the public, outside of their location.

Not long after opening its restaurant doors, they soon launched the brainchild; Tocabe Indigenous Marketplace.

Tocabe is the only American Indian-owned and operated restaurant in the downtown Denver area. When you visit Tocabe, you’ll soon realize it is more than just a restaurant; it’s an educational experience. With each meal, that is offered it’s evident that the owners are focused on educating patrons on Indigenous culture while also being their go-to resource for healthy, locally sourced food and ingredients.

This Indigenous-focused restaurant was founded in 1989, by Matt Chandra and Ben Jacobs. With the launch of its online marketplace, Tocabe’s customers are now able to purchase ready-made Harvest Meals delivered right to their door. At the foundation of Tocabe is the belief that every meal tells a story. It is a representation of the culture that offers a walk-through history with its native-sourced recipes and ingredients.

Meals like Indian Taco and Posu Bowl are just a few items on the menu, along with fry bread, of course.

At Indigenous Marketplace you’ll find a long list of Native food producers and their communities. Chef Michael John, owner of Navajo Mike’s in Phoenix, Arizona, is proud to be a part of Indigenous Marketplace. He appreciates that it allows him to reach customers who are seeking a unique experience and have an interest in locally grown, ingenious ingredients. Through the marketplace, he has been able to grow his business exponentially and seeks to add employees as the demand for his products grows.

Tocabe offers convenience and accessibility to Native and Indigenous foods to consumers regardless of their location. With its convenient, online access you can purchase meals with ingredients that are sourced locally from Native farmers and ranchers. Each meal is sure to be delicious, while also supporting Native and Indigenous communities. It is through this effort that Tocabe’s founders proudly continue to preserve Indigenous culture.

Indigenous Marketplace allows for these food systems to be enjoyed by all households seeking access to foods that nourish the community and feed the soul. By purchasing their food locally, consumers are able to avoid supply chain issues, while supporting local businesses learning about Indigenous culture.

Native Marketplace is a big opportunity for Indigenous brands to become recognized and found by those who are seeking authentic Indigenous cuisine, healthy options, and a connection to their heritage, culture, and a connection to the community.

Recently Tocabe started a video series on YouTube.  They are visiting companies in the Indigenous Marketplace.  The first episode features Navajo Mike's.
