Find Pow Wows Near You

The first step? Figuring out where to go! There are Pow Wows happening all over the US and Canada—from small community gatherings to massive events like Gathering of Nations. The easiest way to find one near you is by checking out the Pow Wow Calendar on PowWows.com.

You can search by date, location, or even specific events you’ve been wanting to attend.

👉 Pro Tip: If you're traveling for a Pow Wow, book your hotel early! The closer you get to the event, the harder it can be to find a good spot nearby.

Know What to Bring

Pow Wows are all-day (and sometimes all-weekend) events, so being prepared is key!

Some are outside – check the weather before you head out.  That may change what you bring for the day.

Here’s a quick checklist of must-haves:

  • Cash – Not all vendors take cards, and you don’t want to miss out on some amazing Native art, jewelry, or frybread.  You will also want cash for blanket dances and raffles.
  • A chair or blanket – Seating can be limited, and it’s always nice to have your own spot to relax.
  • Sunscreen & water – If it’s an outdoor Pow Wow, you’ll want to stay hydrated and protected from the sun.
  • Comfortable shoes – You’ll be walking a lot, so leave the fancy shoes at home.

Pow Wow Etiquette – What to Know Before You Go

If it’s your first time at a Pow Wow, you might have questions about what’s okay and what’s not. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Respect the dance arena – The center of the Pow Wow is sacred. Don’t walk through it unless invited.
  • Ask before taking photos or videos – Some dances and ceremonies are not meant to be recorded. If you’re unsure, ask.
  • Stand during certain songs – When you hear the MC announce an honor song, veterans song, or the Grand Entry, stand to show respect.
  • Support Native vendors – Pow Wows are a great place to buy authentic Native American art, beadwork, and clothing.

Make the Most of the Experience

Pow Wows are about more than just watching—immerse yourself!

Talk to people, try new foods, and learn about different dance styles and traditions. If you’re not sure what’s happening, listen to the MC. They do a great job explaining different parts of the event so everyone can understand and appreciate what’s going on.

Take photos and video to remember the moment, when appropriate.  Add some notes in your journal about things you saw and experienced.

And take time to be present.  Don't experience the entire Pow Wow from behind a phone or camera.  But the phone away and enjoy being in the moment.

👉 Pro Tip: If you really want to get into the spirit, consider attending a Pow Wow in regalia. If you're not Native, that doesn’t mean wearing regalia, but you can still dress in a way that’s respectful and appropriate—supporting Native artists by buying from vendors is a great way to do this!

Plan Ahead

If you’re looking for the biggest Pow Wows of the year, mark your calendar! Gathering of Nations in April is one of the largest, but there are also huge events like the Denver March Pow Wow, Black Hills, and Manito Ahbee Festival. These draw dancers, singers, and spectators from all over North America, making them unforgettable experiences.

Some of the biggest Pow Wows book up quickly, so if you need admission tickets, flights or hotels, reserve them ASAP.
