How to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 in Native American Communities

COVID-19 is a highly-contagious pathogen that can become airborne and infect others who are not adequately protecting themselves. While people everywhere have become infected, Native American communities have been disproportionately affected by the virus.

One of the reasons Native Americans have been affected so severely is due to their higher risk of health complications. This is a result of a greater number of Native Americans suffering from issues such as diabetes, heart disease, and other serious health problems. Anyone with such issues has been found to be more susceptible to developing severe health problems related to COVID-19.

It is for these reasons why Native Americans should be especially careful and protect themselves in a few simple and effective ways. Here are some of the best ways individuals in Native American communities can help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Practice Social Distancing

Humans are very social, which leads to them having a great deal of proximity and physical contact with one another. Unfortunately, this also increases the risk of exposure to COVID-19. A helpful technique to reduce the risk of getting infected is to practice social distancing. This involves keeping a distance of at least six feet from anyone else around you. Additionally, if you feel unwell, or want to take extra precautions, avoid public gatherings.

Wash Your Hands Often

Whenever you interact with anyone, exchange items or money, wash your hands. You should do so thoroughly, using both soap and water, for at least 20 seconds. If you do not have soap readily available, you can carry around a bottle of hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol and apply it to your hands. When washing your hands, make sure to cover your hands entirely, rubbing them together until you have finished.

Wear a Face Covering

Whether it's a face mask or some other cloth face cover, you should wear a face covering when you go out into public places, such as a grocery store. Unless you have difficulty breathing, you should take this precautionary step. This is something that will help you from spreading anything to others.

Protect Your Community

Protect your Native American community by taking these precautionary steps. When you do, you will be doing your part to flatten the curve and protect yourself, as well as the lives of others.
