In a 62-to-36 vote on Thursday, the Senate approved legislation to construct the controversial Keystone XL pipeline.

In case you're unfamiliar with the affected area, the 1,700 mile tar sands oil pipeline would cross right through America's heartland, passing through 1,073 rivers, lakes and streams as well as one of the world’s largest aquifers, the Ogallala. Polluting these waters would be catastrophic.

Obama's press secretary has mentioned that he would veto the bill, but the administration is awaiting an environmental review by the State Department to make their final decision.
