Vintage Beaded Set Native American Pow Wow Regalia
This twelve piece set of stunning women's pow wow regalia was hand made, hand beaded by Mdewakanton Dakota W. Bluestone in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The regalia was worn in the pow wow arena by his daughter. This gorgeous regalia, done with Dakota design and beading, make this 12 piece set (pairs are counted as one – 2 leggings for example are counted as one piece) something any pow wow dancer or collector would be proud to own. Beading is expertly done in turquoise with burnt orange, yellow, orange as the major colors. Geometric design is carried through all pieces, from leggings to belt, moccasins to hair wraps and necklaces.
I will do my best to describe the condition of these pieces: Leggings are beautifully beaded in a lazy stitch method. They are fully beaded front and bag with off white fringe running along the outside seam. The beaded area is 12 inches by 8 inches front and back. This fringe on one of the leggings is detached from the legging itself from about 4 3/4 inch up from the bottom. Fringe could easily be reattached. The top of each is a leather-like or vinyl purple/lillac. It is 5 ” high and designed to fold down and tie, which makes the entire height of these leggings 14 1/2 inches. The beading on these leggings is beautiful. The lazy stitch border along the bottom of each is generally intact but there are a few areas that have pulled away slightly. Moccasins are a size 7. They are 9 inches long and 4 inches wide at the widest point. They are in good condition though the photos will show the condition of the bottoms, discoloration due to wear in the pow wow arena. Beading is in good condition as is the leather at the top and the leather ties. The leather at the top does show some dirt.
Belt With Drop: The belt is 28 inches long and 3 1/2 inches wide. with the beaded area measuring 19 inches by 2 3/4 inches. Attached leather strings are intact, though one string is attached with a safety pin. The drop is 23 inches to the bottom of the cowrie shells and beads (beads and shells measure 4 inches in length). One cowrie shell is missing from the bottom. Hand stitching is visible where the drop is attached to the belt – close look at photos should give a good look at condition. The backside is a deep blue material with hand stitching clearly evident. The backside fabric does show some discoloration due to “wear and tear” in the pow wow arena. A beaded strike-a-light bag is included, fully beaded on both sides. It is 3 inches wide at the top and 4 inches wide at th bottom Flap opens to a leather insert. Inside of the bag is blue. Beading is a little loose on the backside but no missing beads.
There are three necklaces / neck pieces: One is an 18 inch necklace with 4 1/2 inch diameter beaded medallion, one inch beaded, looped fringe and a fully beaded, round strap – each side measures 12 inches. Backside is leather and the entire necklace is in good condition. Second necklace is 2- 13 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch beaded straps connected at the top by a 1/2 inch piece of leather. A pipe stone cross originally hung from this beautiful beaded piece but the cross broke just under the horizontal piece. I will include both pieces of the pipe stone cross though the necklace could be used for any item you'd choose to use. Finally, thee is a beaded neck piece that measures 8 inches top to bottom, 7 inches wide at the bottom and an 11 inch by 1 inch beaded strap with leather extensions. Backside is a pumpkin colored felt, hand stitching visible but in good shape.
This set includes five options for hair: Hair Barrette: Measures 4 inches by 2 3/8 inches and features the same turquoise background with matching geometric pattern. Backside is in good condition, some red color evident under mechanism but overall, beads and border are in good condition.Braid Wraps – one set that is 3″ x 4″ beaded with decorative beads ending with cowrie beads. A second set of braid ties are made with metal cones and metal tubes at the bottom. This set is rusty, with rust apparent on the leather at the top as well as with the metal tubes at the bottom. Finally, there is a piece that I will describe as a ponytail wrap; a beaded piece 2 inches wide by 1 1/2 inches high two sets of beads/imitation hair-pipe and ending with cowrie shells. What I will describe as belt drops are 14 inches long by 1 1/2 inches wide. I have done my best to describe each piece and to give you a good feel for the condition. I may be off on a description or two. Please look closely at the photos to see what is included. This is a beautiful set of pow wow regalia– ready to make a new owner proud! Shipping will be free and I thank you of looking. Pidamaye, thank you for looking.
