The Rumors Might Be True – Rez Ball coming to HBO Sports

Both Native News Online and Navajo Times are reporting that HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel are hoping to film footage for an upcoming episode on the popular sports show which would focus on basketball on the reservation or “Rez ball” as we lovingly call it. According to a press release from the Oglala Sioux Tribe, OST President Bryan Brewer was interviewed via telephone, by Jason Samuels, Senior Segment Producer for HBO Real Sports. Samuels expressed interest in going out to the Pine Ridge reservation to film basketball games between some of the local schools during the Region 8 playoffs. Producers from HBO Real Sports also reached out to Shiprock High School in New Mexico to see if they could film during the Lady Chieftains game.

Last year MaxPreps High School Sports (CBSSports) featured this short video and story about Rez Ball on their website.

Are there any other schools you'd like to see featured on the HBO show?

What a great documentary Rez ball would make. One of the greatest people Mr. Gimbel could interview would be Coach Chad KillsCrow and the Haskell Mens’s Basketball team These are guys that could play at any division in basketball but no one wanted them but Chad KillsCrow. He is a native Coach – Lakota – who uses his language to teach & call the plays. These young men come from over 100 Tribes & the team are young men from all ways of life. What a great part of this documentart be but at an all Native University with Coach, Asst. Coaches & team being all Native trying to make a better life for their families & themselves to make life on the rez a better place for everyone & doing with the love of the game… BASKETBALL. These guys who have been told by white & black coaches that Natives can’t play basketball. Take the challenge & courage to see Haskell Indian Nations University play & try to understand why they are “the guys no one else wanted jusy because they are Native.

Yes we have some awesome ball players here at McLaughlin, SD you need to come recognize the Midgets of McLaughlin. We live on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, which is on the border of North and South Dakota.

While they are showing how good all the natives play ball and showcasing their talents. They need to show how the refs use their positions to purposely make calls in favor of the wasicu teams. Native teams are always playing lopsided teams, meaning you’re playing against 7 players instead of 5!

I would like to see both Rocky Boy High and Box Elder High featured. The schools are located on the same Indian Reservation in Montana and both have recently won State Championships with undefeated season records.
