Silver State Gourd Society Celebration

Posted By Corinne Oestreich August 31st, 2018 Blog

August 18th was the 4th annual Silver State Gourd Society Celebration.

People came from all over to celebrate together and partake in the Gourd Dance. Olivia Sheridan celebrated the finish of her year's reign as Silver State Gourd Society Princess, and the Society welcomed Jacklyn Gone into her reign for the 2018/2019 year.

Staff for the Society are:

  • Monty Williams (Shoshone), Treasure
  • Tommy Phillips (Kiowa, Creek, Hualipai), President
  • Marvin Paul Hand (Pawnee), Vice President
  • Richard Vigil (Apache), Sargent in Arms

I personally attended the Gourd Dance this year, after being invited by Monty Williams. It was a fantastic experience.

You could really feel the energy change in the room once the dance started. This was my first Gourd Dance. I had seen the Gourd Dances at powwows for years, but this was my first opportunity to really learn and enjoy the Gourd Dance without any other powwow influence.

I highly recommend attending next years Silver State Gourd Dance Celebration in Reno/Sparks NV.
