Rep. Steve King: Obama should impose Christendom on Latin America like Columbus

Posted By Toyacoyah Brown February 27th, 2014 Last Updated on: February 27th, 2014

Yet another example of a politician saying something asinine.

Scott Kaufman from Raw Story reports that Iowa Representative Steve King went before the House of Representatives and delivered a long speech in which, among other things, he bemoaned that President Obama doesn’t believe in “the pillars of American exceptionalism” as instantiated in “the values that Christopher Columbus brought here across the ocean.”

“It has caught my attention, Mr. Speaker, when I listen to the circumstances taking place in Venezuela, I can’t help but think about essentially the sister state of Cuba and how they have led the Marxist socialist regime in the Western Hemisphere since about 1959,” King said.

“I think of this Western Hemisphere, all of it, as the domain of, as Churchill described it from this hemisphere, Western Christendom; the foundation of Western civilization, Judeo-Christianity; the values that come from the Old and New Testament; the values that Christopher Columbus brought here across the ocean,” he continued.

The “values” that Columbus — who was sailing under the aegis of the Catholic Spanish monarchy — brought to what would become the Americas included the idea, as articulated in his own journals, that he could “conquer the whole of [the natives] with 50 men, and govern them as I pleased.” His pleasure involved the kidnapping and enslaving of native “Indians,” the majority of whom died on the return trip to Spain.

Video footage from the speech is below:

I concur that is asinine. Like General Patton said to the Nazis, “NUTS!” I am an American, not Native American and born on Mohegan/Mohican land in HoHoKus, New Jersey, and am righteously indignant regarding the thoughts that came out of Rep King’s head and went for a stroll through his mouth onto the wind. I understand Native American positions on many issues like mascots, tobacco, salmon, stewardship of the land, and how every treaty the United States of America made with you has been broken and nearly everything you asked not be done, has. I have had the pleasure of friendships with many Native Americans in my active-duty assignments in the U.S. Air Force and while outside of duty living in the Pacific Northwest. I chose to live in the PacNW because of our shared love of the land, eagles, salmon, and other kinships. Upon attending my first POWWOW at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon, I was asked if I would like to carry the flag out at the begining of ceremonies. Though I could not because I was truthfully not in compliance with the prerequisites, I knew how high an honor that is…the highest honor I have ever received, period. Perhaps someone can take him by the hand and show him the documents circulating following September 11, 2001 from the Nation’s of Islam that the event was payback for Christianity and the Crusades. Latin American already endured a similar fate from Christopher Columbus whose poor record on human-rights is well documented. My 2-cents. Jeffrey C. Aiken
