I know today is Cinco de Mayo, but it is also National Day of Awareness for Missing & Murdered Native American Women and Girls. Bet you didn't know that Indian nation's are restricted in prosecuting these awful crimes. Let me say that again, they are restricted in prosecuting crimes. THATS APPALLING. Tribal Governments can't prosecute non-indians, even if the crime occurred on the reservation. Indigenous women are at risk for assault, rape, and murder 10 times the national average. May 5th has been designated because it was the day Hanna Harris, a young Northern Cheyenne girl, was born in 1992. Just a few years older than I am, Hanna never got to celebrate her her 22nd birthday. She was reported missing in 2013, and five days later her body was found. She had been raped and murdered at just 21 years old. Senate Resolution 60, and this day serves as an opportunity for people to stand in solidarity with indigenous women who are at such a high risk for violence. It also asks for the support in reforming laws that unjustly restrict Indian nation's from adequately investigating, prosecuting, and punishing these crimes against all perpetrators. 4 out of 5 Native American women with be the victim of violence in their lifetime. Count and notice 5 girls in the pictures above. Four of them will be victims of violence.
