Dear Pow Wows.com;
I am writing to say that, as a non-indigenous person, being provided a non-threatening window into Indigenous Cultures and ways of managing life and living has been a very positive experience for me. Seeing the artistry and the kindness with which traditional indigenous ways attempted to deal with the most vulnerable of people in a given community, provided me with a much better understanding of Indigenous culture. Growing up in a community, at a time when, in truth, Indigenous people were “Indians” and, unfortunately, the only “other” of our community, I didn’t fully understand the breadth of the level with which Indigenous peoples’ “right to free speech, right to free thought,” was essentially suppressed. I am no activist, but, I do like the expression, “Each one, teach one”. By your efforts to educate people, you have taught at least one person to take a second look at what I was taught growing up. Perhaps, in time, I will be able to “teach one”. In this way, it is possible to change a worldview, even if it is just one person at a time. Please, continue to teach people about your culture and world in a non-threatening manner. It matters, even if the one’s voice is quieter than the many or the crowd.
