Next Media Animation’s Video on Washington Redskins

Next Media Animation has produced a video summarizing the issues surrounding the use of the term Redskins.

Does this foreign company have a good handle on the issues?

According to their website:

It’s 2013, and Washington’s NFL team still uses the racist Redskins name. Under pressure from members of Congress to get a new name that’s not racist against Native Americans, the Redskins have enlisted conservative political pollster Frank Luntz to spin the team’s name, and trotted out NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who said the Redskins’ name is “a unifying force that stands for strength, courage, pride and respect.”

Even if the Redskins had been founded by W.E.B. Du Bois, were coached by John Thompson and were owned and operated by Desmond Tutu, their name would still be racist. Webster’s dictionary compares “redskin” to “kike” and “darkie” in terms of offensiveness. But what’s worse, and what makes the Redskins name even more racist, is that the team and its current and former owners have a proven track record of racism.

The Redskins’ name was chosen by famous racist George Marshall, who bought the Boston Braves football team in 1932 and changed its name to the Boston Redskins when the team moved to Fenway Park. Marshall renamed the Boston Braves the Redskins to “honor” his coach, who was part-Sioux, and made the coach wear war paint and feathers before games. Marshall, who hired black performers to sing a minstrel song while he proposed to his wife, was the last NFL owner to integrate his team, and only due to NFL and government pressure.
