Native American Student Fined $1000 For Wearing Feather

Posted By Paul G June 5th, 2013 Last Updated on: June 26th, 2013

Chelsey Ramer is a member of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.  Despite being warned, Chelsey wore an eagle feather on her graduation cap.  The school issued a warning and asked all seniors to sign a contract about commencement.  Chelsey did not sign the contract.

The school has, as noted in contract, has fined Chelsey $1,000.  The fine must be paid to receive her diploma and transcript.

Chelsey feels she has been discriminated against.

Is wearing an eagle feather in graduation covered in the American Indian Religious Freedom Act?

Is the fine justified?

UPDATE

Chelsey Ramer has received diploma and does not have to pay fine.

Stand your groups young lady! You have every right to wear that feather respectfully. They can not legally hold a diploma you earned! So do whatever it takes and take it all the way to the top if need be

I am Lakota, Cherokee & Scott-Irish and I am truely proud of who I am. We all need to stand behind Chelsey for standing up for her rights (by Chelsey do this she is also standing up for all our rights at the same time)! Full blood or Heinz 57 if we allow this nation to keep going the direction of disrepect for each other and our beliefs we are all going to go down the drain. Mother Earth & the Creator are very upset with the lack of Love & Concern we have for each other, we will soon be held acountable for our actions.

This is a disgrace. The woman had every right to her Eagle Feather and any school which disallows the display of it is un-American and should be disbanded for its intolerance. We all work too hard to keep our traditions together in this stupid world we are forced to live in that nothing as insignificant as a modern school should be allowed to stand in our way. Our childrens’ rightful school is the Red Way, our ancient traditions and the information our Elders pass on to them, but as we must allow the schools to try and form our childrens’ minds if we are to abide by the laws of this country, we must continue to fight for our childrens’ individualism and right to be who they are. I am shocked by this but unfortunately not surprised.

I am totally over whelmed by this school administration. They are dumber then a box of rocks. They are the most ignorant people as I have seen in a while. Who are they to demand this from their students. Who are they then to turn around and fine this young lady 1000 dollars because Chelsey wore her Eagle Feather Proudly. Shame on them. I am a white woman with children who are N/American’s and grand children who are N/A’s and I am as Proud of them as any parent can be. One of my sons was in Iraq and the other in Afghanistan. Makes me so sad and angry that there is hate and discrimination still here in this 21’st century.
Chelsey hold your head up high you are an awesome young lady.

It does not matter whether the Indian Religious Freedom Act is involved or not. The Eagle Feather is worn whenever an Act of Bravery or an Achievement was accomplished or completed as well as wearing them in our ceremonies, which ARE NOT, religious but Our Way Of Life!

My reply is to BOB. I am a Vet of Foreign Wars, Native American, and a certified EO Rep. Separation of church and state does not mean you cant wear articles of faith individually. Only that the school cant pray collectively. Check yourself before you wreck yourself!
We need to preserve her rights, that’s what I and all other Veterans fought for. Whether you agree with someone or not, preserve their right to religious freedom!

Robert

Stay pround and strong. Don’t pay the fine. You expressed your right and did not sign the contract, which would make it unenforceable in any court.

Arlene Micucci

You go girl! Be proud of our culture, in spite of the white man. You believe in your heritage and stand tall.
We are proud of you.
