AK REBEL!!!

AK REBEL!!!

Alaska Native Rapper AK Rebel has one thing to say to victims of Domestic Violence: “Baby girl, it's his fault and you need to believe in you. Leave him.” That stirring statement forms the focus of AK Rebel's stirring video, “Wake Up.”  “Wake Up” blends vivid images of Domestic Violence Survivors, a powerful plotline about a battered woman's struggle and AK Rebel's lyrical flow into a music video that can appeal to and can impact Indian Country and beyond.

“In order for us to see lower rates of domestic violence,we need more men standing up next to the women and showing them our full support,” AK Rebel explains. AK Rebel, also known as Samuel Johns, was motivated to use his talent to help increase awareness due to several reasons. As a loyal husband and faithful father and focused family man, “I don't want to see my family members, my friends suffer through this.”  Seeing several friends struggle with abuse and injury inspired this skillful speaker, musician and talent to let women” that hide behind the makeup” know that they deserve to be loved and cherished. The result is a moving video that chronicles one woman's decision to leave her cruel partner, followed by images of  triumphant Survivors.

Since 25% of women will endure Domestic Abuse during their lifetime, “Wake Up” is a meaningful music video for all viewers. A feature on the track by Blaack builds a bridge between cultures and shows that this problem affects all colors and cultures. Since the rates of Domestic Violence seem to be frequently higher in Native Communities, Samuel Johns/AK Rebel's outspoken statement is especially significant for Indigenous audiences. ” When I quit drinking, I lost a lot of friends. When I quit smoking weed, I lost more.  When I started doing good deeds, I lost more again,” the young rapper explains,” But none of that matters when my daughter tells me,'Thank you Dad for everything you do for everyone'.” As one of the Native Ladies who appears in this video, I offer many thanks for the bravery shown by AK Rebel by encouraging everyone to “Wake Up”!

My family has suffered from domestic violence, Involving alcohol & Drugs, When my mother was 17 she was mowed down from behind by a drunk driver while she was walking down the sidewalk.
My father was drunk one day when i was 18 months old, We were in the kitchen & my mom was feeding me, my father came into the kitchen with a hand gun, he was drunk. He started arguing with my mother, (my fathers’ plan was to shoot all of us, me, my brother, my mother then himself)but my Aunt walked in & when she saw what was going on she ran out the door, My father then shot himself in the head right in front of us. Fortunately he survived & is part of my life today.
Please speak out against Domestic Violence, Don’t be a victim. Alcohol & or Drugs isn’t the answer to anything it only digs deeper holes. You aren’t alone.
