Exploring Native American History and Grooving to Taylor Swift: Our Trip to San Francisco

I'm excited to share my recent adventure with you, as we embarked on a journey to the enchanting city of San Francisco.

Our mission?

To catch the Taylor Swift Eras Tour concert.  But while we were there we went exploring Native American culture and history.

When you travel, what types of things do you look for?

Do you try to explore historical sites, museums, or amusement parks?

Setting the Stage: The Taylor Swift Concert

The heart of our trip was, undoubtedly, the much-anticipated Taylor Swift concert. We purchased our tickets almost a year ago in the initial sale.  The concert was a present for our daughter.

The anticipation was electric as we joined thousands of fans at Levi's Stadium. The vibe was incredible – a sea of excited faces, all sharing a common love for music. As Taylor took the stage, the energy in the air was palpable, and her performance was nothing short of extraordinary.

The stadium was alive with music, lights, and an overwhelming sense of unity – a memory we'll cherish forever.

A Breath of Nature: Muir Woods National Monument

Our exploration of Native American history began with a journey into the breathtaking Muir Woods National Monument. After the hustle and bustle of the city, the tranquil atmosphere of these ancient redwood trees was a welcome change. As we wandered through the towering giants, we couldn't help but feel a deep connection to nature and the land.

These woods were once home to Coast Miwok people. Walking among these majestic trees, I couldn't help but reflect on the significance of the land to indigenous communities and the importance of preserving their heritage.

Unveiling the Past: Alcatraz Island

Our exploration continued with a visit to Alcatraz Island. This infamous island has a dark history as a former maximum-security prison, but it also holds a significant place in Native American activism. The moment we stepped off the ferry, we were greeted by stunning views of the bay and the iconic cellblocks.

Alcatraz Island A Legacy of Native American Resistance and Resilience

What struck us most was the story of the Native American occupation of Alcatraz in 1969. The island became a symbol of protest, as Native Americans occupied the land for 19 months, demanding their rights and drawing attention to their struggles. The Alcatraz Island tour provided a fascinating insight into this pivotal moment in history, reminding us of the resilience and determination of Native American communities.

“Red Power on Alcatraz” Exhibit – Perspectives 50 Years Later

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the occupation of Alcatraz.  The park services are currently hosting an exhibit.

As you step into the exhibit, it's like being transported straight to 1969. Back then, a group of gutsy Native American activists rocked the boat by occupying Alcatraz Island. Now, this exhibit does more than just tell you about it; it lets you walk in their shoes. With old photos, documents, and even some tech magic, you get a front-row seat to the highs, lows, and the lasting impact of their fight.

But it's not just a history lesson. This exhibit digs into what that occupation means for today's world. It's like a mirror showing how those brave actions are still echoing through Indigenous activism and culture preservation. You'll leave feeling not just informed but inspired.

“Red Power on Alcatraz” is a must-see. It's like time travel with a purpose, a chance to connect the dots between the past and the present. So, if you're lucky enough to find yourself on Alcatraz Island, don't miss this chance to dive into the “Red Power” exhibit and soak up the spirit of those who paved the way for change.
