Q) Too much fun on the Powwow Trail? Too many pieces of Frybread? No worries! We're speaking with someone who can help! Will you introduce yourself to us please?

A) My name is Waylon Pahona, I am Hopi, Tewa and Maricopa Native. I have founded a Facebook group that is called Healthy Active Natives!

Q) Thrilling! What can we expect when we find you on Facebook?

A) We've been active for more than two years. It's a place for inspiration, a place to post about exercise, about fitness, about your goals.  We've blown up! We are actually at 42,000 members!

Q) That's A LOT of Healthy Active Natives!

A) Definitely! It's a really great feeling, a humbling experience to see so many stories and the thank you's for what has been created. Words cannot express what we are doing for our Native People.   We have members around the world…in Afghanistan, Japan, China we've added lots of Canadian Native members in the past couple of days, which is pretty awesome. It's exciting to see!

Q) Marvelous! What's one of the highlights you like best?

A) We have Transformation Tuesday, so a lot of people post their transformations. People understand that it is all about exercising and eating healthy.

Q) That's quite a contrast from the images that usually appear of Native folks when the media talks about health!

A) That's the reason I created the group. I wanted to find those people who want to be healthy. I work as a Personal Trainer and I see the unhealthy images of us, being diabetic, being overweight, high blood pressure. One night I was up late just Googling “Native Fitness” or images of us as being healthy and there was NOTHING. So, that's actually when I started the Healthy Active Natives group and that's when it all blew up! We are adding about 1000 people every week!

Q) WOW! I work out and eat healthy and I had no idea there were so many other Natives living healthy lifestyles until I joined! I think your group is amazing!

A) The key to our group being so successful is positive reinforcement! People sharing what they are doing and other people saying “thank you for what you are doing,” “good job” and letting people know that people care and I think a lot of people like that.

Q) Sometimes with any life transformation, that's all it takes, just one person willing to go first…to get healthy. Then, families and communities and tribes and nations follow in their healthy footsteps!

A) People see the struggles and they wonder how people do it and so I really like that we have a place for people to post how they did it and other people can ask them questions.  I like it when people put their testimonies about how they lost the weight and their testimonies, because people see the commercials about how someone lost fifty pounds in like, two days, and that's what people want. It's the struggle that people are wanting to hear more than anything because they have been going through it themselves.

Q) Well, keep on keeping on! Thank you so much! And we're just teasing about the Frybread…everything in moderation!
A) Thank you! Find us on FACEBOOK at HEALTHY ACTIVE NATIVES at https://www.facebook.com/groups/Healthyactivenatives/

It’s good to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same out of
dare rehashed material. Wonderful read! I’ve bookmarked your site and I’m adding your
