DANCE HARD: A Review of HORSE DANCE by Cree Confederation

“The Hot” , a standout track from Cree Confederation's uplifting Horse Dance CD, displays the group's spectacular energy, which infuses this Northern Drum CD with lively spirit.  Filled with laughing and Victory shouts, this song from Canyon Records 2011 release displays the triumphant feelings that are symbolic of the entire CD.  Horse Dance evokes the best qualities of Powwow music, as it engages listeners and makes us want to dance.

Horse Dance, recorded at the Arizona State University Powwow, features the unique energy of a live recording.  As a result, we feel as if we are enjoying a powwow in person. Songs such as “This Is It”, a rousing contest dance song, capture the suspense of watching champion dancers compete at the highest level. As we listen to “Straight”, we are drawn into memories of watching dynamic dancers demonstrate their skills, honor their tribes and bring Native pride into the arena.  Perfectly suited for preparing for Powwow Season, Horse Dance also represents an opportunity to enjoy Northern Drum style music throughout the year.

Cree Confederation clearly enjoys singing.  Their joy blends with the excitement of the ongoing powwow that surrounds the singers.  The power of the drum stirs the hearts of listeners and echoes the heritage of tribal ancestors.  Yet, Horse Dance fuses their timeless tracks with contemporary emotions that everyone can understand, as in “I Tried So Hard”, a round dance that recognizes the universal drama of relationships, love and hearts.  ” Taste of Red Bull”  places a playful modern touch in the popular Crow Hop dance style. Powwow MC's encourage participants to “Dance Hard” at every powwow. Horse Dance is a CD that gives us all a reason to dance as hard as we can to every song.
