A Poetic Entrepreneur – Native Poet Turns Words Her Poems Into College Tuition

The season of pink and red is among us!

February is right around the corner and love is in the air.

Saskatchewan poet, Tenille Campbell, is definitely feeling the love from her fans and clients.

She recently came up with a literally creative way to make money to help put herself through college. When she was struggling to pay the bills, including her college tuition, and taking care of some of the basics that pop up every once in awhile, such as the car trouble she went through, she began brainstorming ways to put extra money in her pocket.

I had to have headshots done today. My last ones were from like 2014 and altho I loveddddd them, I always encourage my clients to get them done yearly, at least. Because life! And I fail to mention how I don’t follow that advice 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ So I got my ish together and asked my girl @makifotos to help me out. I can’t wait to see her magic as she just gets my face, but in the meantime, here’s a selfie of my main looks. I was like “I need cozy and casual for my academic talks and slutty hoe for my poetry talks.” Big mood. • • • // earrings by @igotitfrmymama and @ms_savagerose // lashes by @houseofbeautybywabanoonkwe // sweetgrass lipgloss and highlight by @cheekbonebeauty // hair extensions by @makeupandhairbyjade // hair curled up and smoothed the fuck out by @karen_gaudry // it takes a community, ya’ll. • • • #sweetmoonphotography #selfieforlife #indigenouswomen #dene #cree #selflove #headshotday #hatebeinginfrontofcamera #longhairdontcare #makesmefeeltradish #introducemetoyourkokum #tenillekcampbell

Since Campbell was already a creative writer, she decided that the smartest way to go was to use her natural abilities to write poetry for a fee.

Campbell put a post on Instagram, letting people know that she was available to write a customized love poem for $100, which also included a copy of her own book of poetry called Indian Love Poems, which of course…you can purchase HERE!

About the Book:

Covering Indigenous adventures from Wahpole Island to Northern Saskatchewan to the coast of Vancouver, #IndianLovePoems is a poetry collection that delves into the humour and truths of love and lust within Indigenous communities. Sharing stories in search of The One, or even better, that One-Night-Stand, or the opening of boundaries — can we say medicine wheel — this collection fearlessly sheds light on the sharing and honesty that comes with discussions of men, women, sex, and relationships, using humour to chat about the complexities of race, culture and intent within relationships. From discovering your own John Smith to sharing sushi in bed, #IndianLovePoems will make you smile, shake your head, and remember your own stories about that special someone. – Amazon

While chatting with each customer to find out about the person who will be receiving the poem, she says that she really ended up connecting on a deep level with these individuals.

Campbell stated in a CBC article, “A lot of these poems were about self-love and love for their family and these very emotional things that I think all people can connect with. A lot of times, it ended up with us both being teary-eyed and they were like ‘I'd never talk about this.’”

In the end, she was able to pay for her entire college tuition!

What an incredible story and a unique way to make money.

Go girl!
