I have just completed my trip to South Dakota for the OGLALA, LAKOTA nations powwow. All I can say is WOW.. such pageantry and beautiful regalia. But also how sad to see the homes is such disrepair. I was told that this is how the people on the reservation want to live. I would like to know, how such a PROUD people could allow themselves to come to this. Homes falling down,, beat up cars and trucks strewn about the landscape. Like no one cares ….. Is not the Land MOTHER EARTH and should be respected??? I can’t help but ask….I went to the Wind cavern and it was shown with such respect and dignity… then why aren’t the tribal people showing the same respect for the rest of the land?
They don’t think like you do. All this orderly “nicey-nicey” thinking comes from Europe.
The Europeans had pigeon-holed everything- including their “God”, and a money-based
society. “Things” were so important to their egos. The Native Americans were deeply
rooted in the naturally occuring things and phenomena, and, lived accordingly, using
biodegradable materials, which could be easily left behind. The Europeans brought
and used non-disposable “stuff” with them, and an attitude of limited connection with
“God”. When the Native People were forced to change their way of living, not everything changed at once… just like everywhere, all the time!
