About the Coushatta Pow Wow

The Coushatta Powwow started in the early 1990’s when a group of tribal members noticed a decline in tribal dance and music in the community and decided to organize a small powwow at a local park in Kinder, Louisiana. The first few years of the event brought local support from Elton and Kinder with an arena of few participants. Today, our powwow has grown to be the largest powwow in the southeast region of the nation with visitors from all over the United States, including Canada.

Already in it’s 21th year, the Coushatta Powwow provides American Indian artists with the prospect of entrepreneurship through our Art Market, where visitors can shop for one-of-a-kind pieces ranging from jewelry to basketry to paintings and eat authentic American Indian foods. Geared towards families with children, the goal of our Powwow is to spread knowledge of the American Indian culture through multiple facets of art including paintings, baskets, music, performance, and food, all of which is available right here in southern Louisiana.

The biggest misconception of American Indians is that we are a part of history; therefore we do not exist. Our Powwow confirms that we are very much alive and are very present in today’s modern world. We want our traditions to continue and be known throughout our native southeast region as well as the United States.
