Nick Cesare (22), a junior at Haskell Indian Nations University, Lawrence, KS heads out today to join a specialized “hotshot” firefighter crew, based in Logan, UT…again!

NC quote

Cesare fought wildfires with one of the highly trained hotshot crews for three months last year and has been waiting for the day he could return ever since. Many Americans first heard of these firefighter crews about a week ago when 19 members of one such crew tragically died in a raging wildfire in Arizona. Cesare said he’s been carefully watching and reading about last week’s tragedy but he has no doubt about returning to his group.

The Forest Service has an office at Haskell which offers temporary summer jobs for students there. Only a few of those jobs are in firefighting and to become a member of a hotshot crew, members have to pass a series of rigorous physical tests during a two-week training period, which includes running a mile in under 10 minutes and doing 50 push-ups in one minute. Cesare passed and was picked right away to join the hotshots.

Cesare’s girlfriend, Jessica Hundley said that she is proud of him and even though it’s a good thing what he does it’s still a dangerous thing and so very scary, too. The news of the tragedy in Arizona really shook her. Who could blame her? The whole Nation was pretty shaken. So, with a heavy heart we wish Cesare the best of luck and remember to always “keep your head on a swivel.”
