unless, you're looking to make money, then that's totally different. if not, expect to use a lot of your own money with a loss but a gain of respect from the powwow community. |

Actually up to 5 years ago we had one every year, but my Lanapa friends moved out of area, and we all made money, they sold their wares and we charged $5 to get in, ran all weekend. People keep calling wanting more. we are close enough to Wash DC to draw a large crowd.

Dear drag by the head, I feel you were very rude to me, every powwow I have attended in VA and MD has charged by the head to visitors, not native americans, if you were a business person you would realize, $5 a head doesnt even pay for the insurance or electricy to put one on. No wonder Native Americans are often not respected, with people like you running around, giving a bad rapp. I do hope you are just having a bad day. and I hope tomorrow is better for you.

We can all pull togethere here and give this guy one hell of a powwow so he can make $5 a person. After paying for drums, food for dancers because they always get in free. (You don't charge the entertainment for performing) And paying for the sound system, this guy should have a great business tax write off as a loss! Hope you have a fat pocket wit a hugh roll of cash before powwow. Kiss it goodby too at the end of powwow! ![]() If you think that you can make a profit from powwow, go for it! Reality will soon set in!

Lay out your ideas and please supply references to show this will be done in a good and right way. If your intentions are honest, people here will flood the area to help!

I don't really care for powwows you have to pay admission to get into. That's why I rarely go to Daybreak Star up in Seattle anymore. This year we went to a nice, family-community powwow run by traditionals in their homeland along the Columbia River and had a great time. We went to Seattle last year, and don't get me wrong the MC and head staff were first rate and I know the organization is raising funds for some very important things and all, but it's the tourist crowd I tend not to like. Some white dude came to our drum, pulled out one of our chairs and just plopped his fat arse down. I politely told him those chairs are reserved for our singers. He looked at me sideways and asked, "So in other words you gotta be a Chief to sit here?" and chuckled to his wife. You see, when the tourists pay to come in they no longer see themselves as humble guests but as paying customers and think they can do or say whatever they want and you just have to take. I actually got up and pointed in a big square around where all the drums were set up, and said, "You see this area? This is not for spectators. And I wasn't a Chief, I was just a Petty Officer who helped pull idiots like you out of the water for four years." He said something grumpily to his wife under his breath and they both got up and huffed away. Other than a heavy rainstorm all weekend the powwow was pretty good last year but paying for everything (admission, camping, the one and only food source was the committee concession stand) made things pretty tight even though drum day pay was generous at the end, if I ever go to that one it'll be just to hang around for awhile and not set up the drum (and stay all weekend) and I'll make sure to get there early so I can enter along with the vendors and everyone before the gate starts charging admission.
There is a reason they_drag_him answered that way: we call it experience. But not everyone feels that way and one user cannot speak for everyone, even us moderators only speak our own 2 cents at a time so don't give up but just think about whether you are wanting a powwow for the right reason. Your answer, re-read carefully, does imply that you just want to make money off of our culture. Hopefully that is not the case. |

I think you may have just come across wrong. If you are wanting to have a pow-wow for children to learn a small one at the school would be educational. Go to your local tribe and look for help. I;ve never heard of a pow-wow really making money, maybe a little for the next years.. My sons been dancing his whole life its all we do is make outfits plan where to go, go and start over.. Theres no money making maybe win and get enough to go another pow-wow or something new for your outfit. We all have jobs other than powwows. Head dancers often just break even after their special. Its the best way to teach children to GIVE! Good Luck.
