I think Saddam had to go, but my own feeling is that we did not
have to get involved in a full scale war to get rid of him....we could
have paid off one of his cronies to liquidate him. I think the
the reason for invading Iraq may be the oil....the man Bush has
hand-picked to lead an "interim" government was convicted of
bank fraud in Jordan, and faces a long prison term if he ever
returns there,

The veterans of SOME wars had a hand in the preservation of our freedoms , but I think the abundance of natural resources just waiting to be exploited had the biggest role to play in creating America's "greatness". Which veterans are responsible for our right to have powwows? None. Powwows were illegal up until the 1970's. They were not threatened by any foreign enemy, but by the white government of the USA. The victory was won not by soldiers oversees, but by the protestors and courtroom rabble-rousers who stood up for us.

Wait a minute--I was going to powwows in L.A. in the late 1960's.

As for Iraq--we didn't bring democracy--we brought anarchy--and
there is a big difference. As long as shrub and his cronies got
their oil and their building contracts, they didn't care what
happened to the country.

OK, I'll qualify that. Powwows were still illegal in many areas (subject to "selective enforcement") up until the 1970's. In some areas, yes they were not outrightly forbidden, even many years earlier. I am glad for those who were able to powwow freely and openly in the 50's and 60's, or earlier. But not so for everyone, unfortunately. A personal friend of mine stood watch for cops when powwows near Yakima were held in secret. Something about non-white and non-Christian religious activities bred suspicion of terrorist or communist activities. Anyways, I'm sorry, we were talking about Iraq? :D :D

Wow, seems like things really haven't changed. The Bush clan is still going after non-white and non-Christian religions and calling them a threat and terrorists.

:D
