Country Singer's Criticism of Bush Draws Fans' Ire

The lead singer of the Texas-based country trio the Dixie Chicks apologized Friday after telling a London audience she was ``ashamed'' of President Bush, remarks that stirred an uproar among conservative fans and prompted radio stations to boycott the group's songs.

``As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful,'' Natalie Maines said in a statement issued in Nashville. ``I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect.''

The Grammy-winning trio found itself engulfed in a public relations backlash after Maines criticized Bush's Iraq war policy during a London performance and told the audience, ``Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.''

While anti-war groups endorsed Maines' position, the remarks provoked an outcry from politically conservative fans who form a lucrative pillar of support for the .MDNM/trio, which have been riding high after winning three Grammys last month.

``I think the response from the American people, particularly Texans and country music fans, pretty well speaks for itself,'' said White House spokesman Scott McClellan when asked for the president's reaction to Maines' statement.

Maines, who has never shied away from asserting her opinions, at first stood behind her views in a statement that the Chicks posted on their website Friday. ``I feel the president is ignoring the opinions of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world,'' she said. ``My comments were made in frustration and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view.''

But hours later, she retracted her remarks after radio talk show hosts roasted the group and angry fans vowed to boycott their songs.

Super, your right. We should recoup the $100 billion dollars that this war is going to cost in months, maybe less. Not to mention the humanitarian aid we have pledged to give afterwords. And it should only take a month or so for the stock market to regain the money that has been lost in the last three months while the country was uncertian about the war.

Fredom of speech isnt an option when you have people that will kill you for saying something.

What about North Korea? I am hoping that they have a wild card or a plan B for when we send in all our troops to iraq and then the North Koreans come in right up our butts. Korean War II is on the rise. If THAT happens, World War III isnt far away.

The only peace I see in the future is the silence of nuclear holocost. Hate to say it but it is true.

Yeah peace is a good plan but as long as their are people in office who are there for their OWN interests, and people in caves who think everybody in America are rich obnoxious snobs like OUR LEADERS, then peace is not possible.

Id be the first one in line if a PEACE vote came up tho.

A French Web site is urging people to send pretzels to U.S. President, who fainted and fell off a sofa in January 2002 after gagging on the salty snack.
The Web site, www.bretzelforbush.com, says the pretzels will be stored at a secret location before being sent to the White House in a historic mass action.
The retaliation follows moves by some in the United States to change the names of French fries and French toast to Freedom fries and Freedom toast.
The pretzels are on sale for seven euros ($7.56) each, with one euro going to a children's charity. So far some 250 euros have been raised for the charity.
"We think that to oppose war is not to be against the American people, but simply against the politics of the Bush administration," the Web site says.
After the fainting incident, Bush lamented not heeding his mother's advice to chew pretzels before swallowing and his wife Laura joked he was now "practicing safe snacks."

3. As far as creating them that is partilly true. However at some point we need to correct our mistakes. At the time that we created these monsters they were the least of two evils. Kind of like partnering with Russia in WWII. And much like we work with Saudi Arabia now. (Don't think they are our friends. The government of Saudi has been instrumental in teaching the people to dislike Americans.)

4. Your right, the war isn't just about terrorism. It is also about freedom of speech, choice and a government that represents the people of Iraq. Spend some time looking at the attrocities committed by the government of Iraq against the people of Iraq.

5. Bush is not fighting this war for oil. This is one of the least thought out arguments that I have heard. If it was about oil we would have taken over Kuwait when we were in there. We would be drilling in Alaska. And we wouldn't have stopped in Iraq 12 years ago. When I hear this argument I only see someone who dislikes Bush and hasn't really thought out the reasons behind this war.

Lastly I belive that anyone who is rationally discussing the war, both for and against is Patriotic. That is part of what makes America the greatest country in the world, the desire of it's people to question its' leadership and strive for the best that can be had.

I don't really care what they had to say about the man...I agree with them....I think the time and the place- maybe people don't like...but whatever... I don't think Bush has enough brains to make decisions....anyway....

in case anyone cares....there is a direct relation between educational level (formal or otherwise) and peace....the more educated the more things a person can defend and come up with alternatives to war....thing about that....but

i think pow wows.com shouldn't have to go here anyhow....it's a place for us to get a way from this damn war talk...;)

I have heard this line of attempted reasoning from many and I think it STINKS and it's evil. Just more proof that Americans value greed and the all-mighty dollar, no matter WHO has to die for it.

It's wrong and it's lacking in soul. How can one hide behind the cloak of humanitarianism when we are going to bomb their cities, make orphans of their children and widows of their wives!?!?! :Yell

Regarding the remark Natalie Maines made about being ashamed that President Bush was from Texas is really funny because he wasn't even born in Texas!!! He was born in Conn. !!!

My only hope is that enough people are still mad enough to boycott their concert when it comes to town, so I can upgrade my tickets.... :D

That said, I understand her point view. Her stance was never against the troops, but against the President.

I dont see her viewpoint as being all that different from anyone else. None of us want a war. None of us want innocent people to die. But there comes a time when the cost of inaction is the death of innocents.

If you look for the opportunity to slam her/them and generalize that she's only changing her tune to pander to the "hicks" that buy their albums, then nothing that anyone says is going to change your mind.

If you are willing to concede that a one line comment is a pretty narrow point to make a leap to being able to identify her entire context/state of mind, then you can see that its possible that this whole issue has been blown out of proportion.

Everyone is high on trying some other route, but they are short on presenting options that haven't already been tried. Saddam agreed to disarm at the end of the Gulf War in 1991. He hasn't done so. For 12 years the UN has passed resolution after resolution saying this is the last chance. Each time Saddam has essentially ignored the UN. Economic sanctions havent worked.

This isnt about Oil, if it was, we would've taken it '91. Bush Sr. has just as close of ties to oil as GW does.

I offer this link that, I feel, has become so representative of many of the "protestors" I have heard.

Its fun to wave the peace banner. But give me a viable alternative that hasnt been tried. The only future I see with the "give peace a chance" stance involves more attacks similar to 9/11. I'm not willing to bet the lives of myself, my family and my friends that holding hands and singing Kum-by-ya will make all of this go away. Its not that want war, I just want to remain realistic.

Now come on....That comment has what to do with anything? I was born at the US Air Force Academy, what does that make me? I have lived 27 years of my life in Kansas City. I am a Missourian/Kansas Citian. It has nothing to do with where I was born. Bush lives in Texas, he was the Govenor of the state. If he cant be said to be a Texan, then I don't know who does.

I support reasons behind going after Saddam. 12 years of diplomacy hasnt worked, he isn't going to voluntarily disarm, the time for talk has long passed.

I will ALWAYS support the military. Right or wrong they have a job to do and its an important one.

While I agree that diplomacy has failed, I strongly feel that GW could've handled the approach to this ultimate end in a much different manner. I truly think that if the situation had been approached with a leveler head, there would be a UN resolution approved by the Security Council and a stronger coallition of supportive nations. I never got the sense that GW would be well received in the Foreign Relations Department, and I dont think he has proven me wrong yet.

well...that's one of the remarks she made that started the whole bruhaha!! Also,if you think the apology she made was not forced upon her by her record company & was not written by some spin doctor at her record company than you are sadly naive in my opinion..( I live in Nashville & have two good friends who have songs recorded by the Chicks & I'm associated with the music industry here & I'm not a "hick" nor do I own any Chick CDs but I know how things work here!!)
Natalie had a right to speak her mind & people have a right to disagree with her..but I still feel that the media has made way to0o0o much of
