Know the warning signs...

Know the warning signs, how to get help

Medics in the war zone know what to look for — the talkative private who suddenly becomes silent, the normally calm leader who can’t sit still, the gunner who never sleeps.
But military mental health experts say medics shouldn’t be the only ones on lookout. If a battle buddy stops acting the way he normally does, pay attention — and know that help is available.
Multiple tours, combined with other stressors such as broken relationships or financial issues, can lead to a feeling of helplessness — it’s hard to deal with what’s going on back home while in Iraq or Afghanistan.
But the stress of battle itself — especially after losing friends or people you’ve promised to take care of — can cause even a seasoned veteran to break down.
Sometimes the signs may be subtle, as when someone stops interacting in conversations during lunch. Other times, a flood of tears or a refusal to go out on patrol can reveal a more obvious case of someone under duress.
The military has set up combat stress units where line leaders can send their troops for “three hots and a cot” — some rest, three hot meals, time away from the battle and a chance to talk to a mental health care worker.
Usually, people go back to their units within a couple of days. If more time is warranted, they can go to the combat support hospital or be evacuated from theater.
If you’re the one showing signs of distress, remember that it’s important not to go on patrol and risk the lives of other people if you’re not sure you can perform as you should.
