When I first entered the service, I was happy to see one of my own wearing a uniform too, but it wasn't cool when the Indian you met didn't know their clan or claims to not know their language. I mean, I have met over 50 in my seven years, you spot an Indian when you see one. I met this Navajo, a Marine at my last command and he told me he was from Phoenix. Obviously by his body language he didn't want to talk about where he was from. He said he didn't know his clan and never talked to any other natives on the ship. That wasn't cool. I was like, "okay, I mean where on the rez are you from?" He said to me Phoenix.......I was like, "never mind" and went about my way, never to acknowledge this guy again. I came across two girls in San Diego once too, they told me they were from New Mexico, so I was like, "cool, what's your clan?" They claimed to be part of a gang on the rez and I laughed. They hung out with colored sailors and everytime I would see them on base they'd act like I wasn't cool and throw gangster signs at me. What do you all think about that? I know if you came across on of those Indians who refuse to be proud of their blood, you'd be ashamed for them? I was. I just wanted to share that with you all, it was bugging me forever! I have come so far in the military where I tell you like it is, so when I see one of them lost Indians, I rub it in their faces and be like, "what's up?" even though, they don't like it. It's just not cool, for all you who are military, don't be ashamed........anyway, just something that was on my mind.

ndn poseurs, thats not cool. if they fight for their country it includes their own culture and traditions and to blatantly show disrespect by hiding it is just obscene.

Echo-I'm not NDN-but i would be ashamed of them too. It reminds me of some family members and a few ppl I knew around the neighborhood. My husband has this friend from N.C.who moved up here a few years ago and he started seeing this girl that I knew from way back in grade school. She told my husband and his friend that she was from Brooklyn and thats where she grew up- I was like WHAT?! That girl is from South Troy- she went to p.s.#12 on 1st street in Troy right here in the middle of NY State. You jus gotta laugh at some of these ppl. I also know a couple ppl who act like they were raised in the hood- talking about how they're 'caught up in the game'-knowing damn well their mothers bought them everything on their backs. They try to front like they've been selling drugs and pistol whippin their foes-never seen a gun in their life. I don't understand why they would want to even live that life- like it's so glamorous- they don't realize you can't retire from selling drugs.These ppl are just lost.

I was just talking to my sis in Texas, she's also Navy, we were laughing our butt off cuz she's met them too! This is what she encountered"

1. "I don't speak Navajo, because I was raised by Blacks".
2. "I don't care to learn my language, because I'm too good for it".
3. "I don't care to go home or learn my language".
4. You meet an Indian who has more money than you and claims to be the daughter of the vice president. she doesn't want to be associated with you.
5. Half breeds who claim to be more Hispanic when he/she is full Indian.....(that doesn't fly, cuz we can spot an Indian anywhere.....even south of the border).

7. Met a Sioux girl who only dates whites, she claimed "all native brothers were drunks" then the next day I saw her hammered locking lips with every white boy on the block.

wellll i'm not in the military but i have this freakin funny story of a lil trip i took out to ummm chinle over the summer last year to visit my sis summer before she headed home to her motherland! LOL..

we sat down to eat at Junction Cafe in Chinle and ordered our drinks and the waitress was being all snot nosed to us too and this was a navajo woman probably in her ummm early 40's or older... but we ordered our drinks and my sis and I started talking about going to the famous EARLS in gallup..so we changed our minds on eating there and told the waitress and the waitress was like "what? is everything too expensive for you??" my sis and I were all "ummm no... we just decided to go elsewhere" LMAO!! that was dumb... but when we went up to the cashier to pay for our drinks..talk about a total ditz or a girl living in a "box" lol... I was inquiring the cashier about their handcrafted stuff because i wanted to see if they had one with my clan on there... SHE LOOKED VERY NAVAJO...but when i asked her if one of them had my clan on there..her response was "I'm not navajo, i don't understand what they say on there" so i was like "oh okay, well can i see them" so i started to go through them and then after awhile... I asked her "so what tribe are you from" and she was like "i'm half apache and half mexican oops i mean spaniard" LMAO!! my sis and I just looked at each other like "UMMMM OHHH KAY...whatever chicky...whatever floats your boat" LMAO!! but geez we cracked up about that! LMAO!! I think she was probably embarrassed about her "mexican" half or she wanted to seem more of a mija by saying she's half spaniard! LMAO!!! HELLLLLLOOOOO!!! LMAO!!!

anyways..just wanted to share that.. since we're talking about people in the "box"

shoot i dunno my language 100% buh my incentive is to learn it, no matter how hard im gonna study it (even if i still sound like a white person) and pass it on. You would think that clans is a given, i mean hello that's like not telling your kids who their grandma is or that the cute guy you've been eyeing is your cuzzin, AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!

I met a Hopi girl when I was a Marine in the 80's and she was slobbering all over any white guy in the e-club at Pendleton. She was out there. Kinda ditzy. I almost got in a fight here in NY with a Navajo who said I was hitting on his girlfriend ( a Cheyenne) who denied they were even going out. He was so drunk I could have just pushed him and he would have fell over. All I asked them both was what tribe they were from.
He got 86'd on the spot, for raising hell with me, and he could barely stand...


But, most ndns I have met in the military have been really cool too me. Tribes from all over ndn country. The most ndns I saw in one spot was in Camp Pendleton in 91. We were at a house party at this Lakota CPL who lived at base housing. there was about 20 of us. Half us were getting ready to ship out to Saudi for the 1st Gulf War.

This happens all the time in every walk of life, and most every native family, it has since the turn of the century! That's what happens when you are conquered by white society; they make you feel ashamed and get you to buy into the belief that assimulation is a "good thing." As for myself; I chose a man that is full-blood, my two siblings married people of the whiter race. I truely believe that in the back of their minds they want life to be easier for them and their children. The term,"lost indians" is right on the mark Echo!

Yeah, I get what Echos saying, she's heard me many times talking **** about other natives who didn't know who the hell they were......like the other day I met this navajo dude who was a Marine and served in Iraq as well, I was laughin about our foreman and said something to him in navajo and he just looked at me like HUH????.....Oh boy, I was about to come straight out of next week and ***** slap him, but I was like ne'er mind.........but yeah I met lotsa cool *** natives who I partiedw ith in the "suck"........one time we had about 20 dudes from different tribes in our barracks room, which was later christened the "Rez" by our Platoon commander....LOL!!! goot times.............

wow, i can't believe that no one has even mentioned that perhaps some people who "act ashamed"
are not ashamed of being ndn at all, but perhaps they are ashamed that they are ndn and know nothing of their heritage. maybe they are afraid of "real ndn's" ridiculing them for not knowing..... sounds like some have a legitimate reason for feeling ashamed.... as for the others who straight out don't care- they deserve getting blasted...those are a disgrace
