I am a veteran (US Navy) and would like to help you...but not exactly sure what you mean...are you presenting a 3-5 min speech, or just writing one? Is it like, why are veterans honored? what does it mean to be a veteran? if you can elaborate a little on what aspect of being/honoring veterans you need< i will try to help...

are you writing a speech on all veterans or Native vets in Particular. i dont about where you come from but for many Native veterans they were not allowed to place wreaths at the cenotaphs during remeberance day ( it has changed now, ) But I thought that was so disrespectful that everyone else got to place wreaths and be recognized for thier contributions to the wars and our own people werent. it was one thing that my uncle was proud to be and until the past few years he was unable to grieve and remember the way any honored soldier should be allowed to but when the day came that pride was very clear as a group of Native vets proudly placed thier wreaths. I think too many times our people are not recognized for out efforts in world conflicts such as war, It was our land to begin with so why shouldnt we protect it with pride and then be allowed to be remembered for it :)
Just a thought. |

my topic is celebrating veterans. and we, the students, have the chance to interpret that in any way we want...just has to be relevent to the topic. I am 1 of 3 native americans that are in my class...the rest are white. so it's kind of intimidating...but anyways... i started thinking about writing it like it this:
"The rain had drenched the thoughts of the men who encountered it. The cold seeping into their ready bones. Their minds encrusted with the longing to be home, and filled with the joy to be caught in a lovers fold. The calling of the cannons, had brought more fear than what fear could bring itself. The wounds…gashly, and awaited attendance. The calling of another dreadful day could be heard from miles away. Yet to a soldier, were the callings of his demise. Whether it be from the American frontier to the American Revolution. From The Native Americans… withstanding their pride, to the hasty civilization of the Iraqi people. Veterans have exclusively been symbolized as warriors, akicitas, fighters, soldiers and… lastly heroes. Heroes to whom, the structure, the hope of the nation’s people have willingly depended on. To the soldiers to whom our American people have had the opportunity to take part in. And to the Akicitas, our Silent Warriors, given honorable mention to the Native Peoples. To the Fallen soldiers, given the nation the strength to sustain from future grievances. Without our heroes, soldiers, warriors, how would our day, this present day, how would it be different, how would it change us, if at all, what if we hadn’t prevailed the battles, and the wars that we have, before our time? To take for granted for which we stand for, our nation, our people, ourselves, has come to Flanders field: 'Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die.' Celebrating our veterans, to mean actually we are celebrating ourselves, and for which we stand for, and for what they, our veterans, my akicitas, have determinedly fought for. Thank you"

Wichahpi06...
Great! you don't need any help...and don't be intimidated..few, if any could say it better! Most of us, I think, served and fought for the ones we love, and for our country...and felt like, if not me, who? if not now, when? ALL wars are costly..to both 'sides' and many suffer...so war should always be avoided where possible, but there are things worth fighting, and if need be, dying for... Goo dluck, but think you'll do just fine! Colonah |
