Asvab
Well I took the ASVAB today at the Reserve center. For those who do not know, the ASVAB (Armed Service Vocational Apptitude Battery) is a placement test for those enlisting in the military (Coast Guard included). The ASVAB is divided up into 9 different test ranging from Mechanical knowledge to Math Skills. The test is graded and based on the score, the enlistee can decide what career path within their branch of service to follow. Each portion of the test is timed (10 to 35 minutes per test). And it takes about two and a half hours to complete.
I was the last person there at the Reserve Center. There were about ten people total. None of them teenagers, but twenty-somethings and some in their early thirties. Yesterday I had two working fires back to back and got only 30 minutes of sleep this morning before shift change. So needless to say I was exhausted. I thought about calling my recruiter and rescheduling for next week, but I decided to suck it up and just do it. If I bombed this one, I can always take it again. On top of that I am a pretty good test taker anyway. The questions for each test start out easy and get progressively difficult. The hardest part for me was the Electrical Knowledge... I know nothing about it... and maybe knew one question. I finished each portion early and shut my eyes until time was up. Eventually the test administrator stopped our time when the last person was done. Once we were done, we were offered a chance to stay and see our scores, and talk with our recruiter. All but one stayed. I was curious and dead tired. It took about ten minutes but our recruiters invited us to their offices- I had scored an 88, which according to him qualified me for anything in the Navy. He said these scores weren't "Official" since they are hand graded. It will take about a week to make them official. So next week I'll be back for my official score and to get the ball rolling on my physical. I'll sell the answers for the ASVAB for some Pws.com points. PM me for details.

Good for you, man!
Now you just have to get through basic, and from what I've read here that should be a piece of cake for you! Best of luck!

ANCHORS AWEIGH (US Navy Theme)
Stand Navy out to sea Fight our battle cry We’ll never change our course So vicious foe steer shy-y-y-y Roll out the T.N.T. Anchors Aweigh Sail on to victory and Sink their bones to Davy Jones hooray! Yo ho there shipmate Take the fighting to the far off sea Hear the wailing of the wild banshees All hands, fire brands Let’s blast them as we go, so Anchors Aweigh my boys Anchors Aweigh Farewell to college joys We sail at break of day day day day Through our last night on shore Drink to the foam Until we meet once more Here’s wishing you a happy voyage home! Heave a ho there sailor Everybody drink up while you may Heave a ho there sailor For your gonna sail a break of day Drink away, Drink away, For you sail at break of day, hey! Anchors Aweigh my boys Anchors Aweigh Farewell to college joys We sail at break of day day day day Through our last night on shore Drink to the foam Until we meet once more Here’s wishing you a happy voyage home! |

I can't leave out the Marines I'm going to be looking after...
From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli We fight our country's battles in the air on land and sea First to fight for right and freedom and to keep our honor clean We are proud to claim the title of United States Marine Our flag's unfurled to every breeze from dawn to setting sun We have fought in every clime and place where wecould take a gun In the snow of far off northern lands and in sunny tropic scenes You will find us always on the job The United States Marines Here's health to you and to our Corps which we are proud to serve In many a strife we've fought for life and never lost our nerve If the Army and the Navy ever look on heaven's scenes they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines

Update
When I first went to see my USNR recruiter in late May, I was a chunky 235. Of course I was too big to get in under my height/weight requirement for my age, and I was way off on my body fat. 1 June 2004 I began my weight-loss routine and today I'm between 205 and 200. Unfortunately I still can't get in under body fat, but I've only got 5 - 10lbs to go on my weight. The last time I saw my recruiter was 2 Sept 2004, and I still was overweight and too fat. I told him I'd be back in a month, and hopefully I'll be down to weight.
Right now I can beat the PFT for the Navy in terms of running 1.5miles, push ups, and sit ups. To be a FMF Corpsman I have to also meet USMC PRT standards too (3mile run, pull ups, and pushups). So I'm taking baby steps. FMF school will be a ways off after I enlist anyway.
