Florette Work for fans, etc
I have had several folks ask me how to do florette work.
I promised the person who taught me how to do the trimmed florette work that I would not pass that information on. But I will cover how to do the basic florette work for those of you who would like to know how to do that. Basic florette work, feather work, shingling is done on fans, drop feathers, etc. It is done by using florette feathers. You can buy florette feathers from crazy crow, Patrick Scott and a few other places. In order to do this type of work you are going to need florettes, a super sharp pair of scissors (hair cutting ones are the best), a ruler (I use a metal one with metric on one side and stanard on the other side) some glue (tacky glue works good) and whatever you are doing the work on, extensions, etc. Oh I forgot a toothpick comes in pretty handy too Ok stay tuned and I will take some pictures and go through everything

The first pic is basically what you need to get started.
I have several colors of untrimmed florettes in the pic. The glue is just Aleene's Quick Dry tacky glue (get it at any craft store or Walmart) The second pic shows an untrimmed florette feather. When you get them, they are about 4" long

To get started grab a florette feather by the quill and lay it on your ruller. Placing the tip of the feather at the 1" mark. Take your scissors and cut the feather off at the end of the ruler. All you are using is that 1" tip of the florette.
After you cut them there will be a little excess webbing on the sides, gently pull off the excess that is not attached to the quill. That will leave you with pieces that look like those in the second picture

Next lay your feather for your fan, drop feather, etc with the extesion glued in onto your ruler. For this one I'm doing a drop feather that I cut the quill off right at the webbing.
I'm going to put that edge on the 1" mark. Then I'm going to lay my florette down on top of everything, letting me move it around until I get it where I like the look. Then I look at the ruler. The quill is at around 1 1/2" so I put a little mark there. So the bottom of my florette will be 1/2" below the base of the feather, leaving 1/2" up on the base.

Put that mark on the front and back of your extension.
Put a small drop of tacky glue on the backside of the florette feather, right at the base. Use your toothpick to spread it out a little only going up toward the tip maybe 1/8" to 1/4". You are going to start each row of florette work on the backside of the feather first. place the bottom of the florette feather on your mark, centering the quill of the florette on your extesion. Hold it there for a second or two. Now you are going to roll the edges of the florette around the extension. I use my other hand to do this so I can keep the quill of the florette pressed against the extension. Once you get done with the back. Do the front rolling it toward the back. This is the part that takes some practice!!!! Once you get the technique down.....the rest is easy!!!

After everything dries......
Make a mark on the front and back of your extension 1/4" below your last mark (if you can't see it, just use the bottom of the florette feather as a reference. Now do the same process with the next color of florettes. Doing the backside of the feather first and then the front side. You do this with each row. Sometimes you may want to vary the spacing from one row to the next. Try putting your mark at 1/8" or 1/2" and glue down a row of florettes. That will give you a different look. That's where creativity comes in.
