I do the wampum stich in beading, that works so much easier and if I make a mistake in the pattern I can cut it out and replace it anytime. Never need a loom again. I am working on my pipe bag and it has a pattern of ~ 10 x 16 inches,,,that's a lot of beads!!! |

As per the glue I use Goop from walmart, it is great and stays flexible. To protect the beads after I am done with a project and I want to keep it from getting distroyed i put two layers of podge on it. Also from walmart or any other craft shop,,,brushes on milky and dries clear.

different idea - try hem binding clips
I did not use a stiff layer in my last barrette, but if you wanted to, you could sandwich the butter lid plastic (i love that idea) between your beadwork and a leather layer. On my last barrette, I measured a piece of leather the same size as my beadwork. Then I sewed three hem binding clips onto the leather (I find these are so much easier to snap into place...you can find in arts and crafts section, like 50 for $2 or something). Then I sewed the leather piece onto the beadwork, using a combination whipstitch/fringe, I think you call it. Basically, for edging you can take two beads out, away from piece, then three more, then two down towards piece to form loop. Then go back up through last two, over adding three more and down adding two more. I know it's confusing and I'll try to add pics later if I ever get a digital. It's been done before, I know, but I like it. If you don't want this edging, you could just whipstitch in thread that matches your background or border color of design. But seriously, you have to try the hem binding clips if you haven't already. I always carry a dozen in my bag and they are such lifesavers. Also, you can make a quick dangle barrette by stringing two strands of beads though the hole which conveniently comes in those clips...have to..stop..rambling :-)

Wow I usually bead it first, then add another pice of leather with two holes in it, and the clasp in the middle of the two then sew the two together. Or if it's the other kind then I just find a stick and put two holes in the leather then bead both of them. Just adding my styles to the potluck! lol :p

I don't even use leather on any of my barretts anymore, instead I use vinyl. They last so much longer. After my hair gets braided it's still pretty damp from all the hairspray and goop that stays in your hair. After a while my leather barretts would start streaching and breaking. Plus it's easier to edge bead. I use the same stuff for my barretts. Vinyl is water proof.:p ,and sweat proof.:p

the cherokee use the same stitches pretty much everyone else uses.. there is'nt really a particular outstanding cherokee way of beading that i know of. I would suggest buying horace goodhue's off loom beading book or sadie starr's first beading book. Both are illlustrated well and in plain english and easy to understand. Also they are full of the basics of beading, but the sadie starr gives you ideas to embellish and add your own touches.

Hey one problem I have when putting the leather on the back is that my pellon I sew it on sticks out and you can see white in some places. I can't cut to close to the edge cua it will snip the threads. So what do anyone suggests to use instead of pellon? I like using canvas but it does the same thing. What is this crib liner everyone keeps talking bout?

they are all gonna do the same thing.. but if you are using dark beads on white.. try coloring in the spots that the dark beads will go with a like color marker before beading it and then I have cheated and used a marker on the edge as well.. and then it does'nt really show through teh edge beading either.
