Hey,
Ok this is going to be a long one, but I was watching a newscast from Haskell and a lady they were interviewing was discussing about native education and why native young ppl should not have to go to white schools because they are not being represented. That came out crummy but she was saying that the no child left behind act doesn't support native children. It's like she was saying that native young ppl are not being taught the right things in non native schools. So here's my question to all the young ppl, I don't know if any of you go to haskell or go to a non native university or high school, but how has your educational experience been? For those of you that go to a non native school, do you feel any racism leveled against you because you are native? Do you feel that your race and culture are being represented at your schools? And what makes Haskell more appealing to young natives? With the whole winner school district issue where young ppl were being picked on because of their race and how young natives were not allowed to express their culture, how do you guys feel about what happened in winner and have any of you experienced the same kind of discrimination? thanks! |

Haskell Alumni
I went to Haskell and loved every minute of it. There is an American Indian Studies Program that is all about Native culture, history, literature, film, religion, leaders etc. And these classes are taught by Native teachers and you are surrounded by all Native students so you aren't a minority. There is a strong sense of community at Haskell that is not present in large state universities. I also went to KU and felt lost in the sea of non-Indian population. I grew up in a predominantly non-Indian community and when I began attending Haskell I finally felt like I belonged and could express myself and my culture without being uncomfortable about it.
