How many of you know your language?
At my school the other day in one of my classes we were talkin about the difference between cultures with the exchange students. This one Asian kid(I am not even gonna try to spell his name) had come to watch our native clubs pow wow and asked why the kids and adults there were all speaking english. I didnt know quite how to respond but he said he was really dissapointed because he wanted to "hear another language other than ugly english", but i told him its because not all the tribes have the same language and that if it was spoken in a native language the caucasian people that were there would not understand what was going on.
ANYWAYZ to the point it got me wondering how many of the natives there actually were fluent or knew any of their language. I know a lot of the western Cherokee dialect, enough where i can have a conversation and my boyfriend is teaching me Hualipai(sp?) So how many of you can carry on a conversation in your native language? |

I know a hand full of words in Cherokee but thats it, I've always wanted to learn how to speak more but it's hard finding the time to learn with two kids and all the things I have to do. I know people who speak both eastern and western it's just finding the time to learn. Maybe when my youngest get 's to be about five I'll try to learn more, we'll see.

as sad as it is, i can't speak very well, but iam working my but off to learn how to... Its not that i dont know the words, its that i can't string them together into sentences. I have however, become very good at understanding Ojibwe/Odawa, and i can usually tell what people are talking about, and if thier talkking about me....

i know a few words in choctaw, and i know how to introduce myself in laguna. i wish i could learn more, tho. my dad once tried to teach me how to speak choctaw, but i guess we didnt stick with it. choctaw was his first language, but my mom isnt choctaw, so they cant speak to each other in it. i love language. i can speak french, italian, german and japanese better than any of my tribes languages.

I have to know my language. My relatives always get after me for not speakin it. I am not very fluent at speaking my first language which is Navajo. I took classes and it helped. I really understand it but speaking it is pretty hard. u have different words or phrases on first person second person and third person. EX: 1st person is Shi (Me my or I) 2nd Bi (him or her or it) ni (his hers its) 3rd Nihi (us) its hard to explain. One navajo work means alot.
