Correct me if I am wrong but does not the Picture of "Walks with Effort" Ponca 1914
Look like someone that Gourd Dances??
He has a Banderlero of what looks like Mescal Beans and Silver Beads and a neckerchef attached to it
He is wearing a white shirt and black pants with a nice Tie and a bird as a tie tack
And a Fan in his left hand And since we cant see his Left Hand I am guessing there is a gourd but maybe not
But to me this sure does look like someone that has Gourd Dance clothes on

Comments Anyone????

Josiah,
Your keen observations of the items worn by "Walks With Effort" (1914) do have a similarity to Gourd Dance items. However, I believe you are seeing the manner of dress for a Ponca man (typical in 1914) that was a member of the Native American Church.

I was going to make a comment that his tie tack reminded me of a waterbird that you would indeed associate with the NAC
. Very interesting, And also that he looks like a present day Gourd Dancer!
Thank you Historian for your Photos and comments I always learn something new when I talk with you...

I'm a descendant of Standing Buffalo and another cheif (can't remember the name at the moment), and I'm related to the Big Goose family. Neat pics! I have some old Kaw photos, might have to scan them and show them sometime!

I would like to see some other old Kaw photos. I only have a few myself. Perhaps you could add them to the thread I started on Kaw photos a while ago.

There is a picture of a fancy dancer, from the twentys. If memory serves that is Dennis RooughFace one of the starters of the "Crazy Dance" or now known today as the Oklahoma Fancy dance.

FYI...In reference to the photo of White Eagle (Ponca), it may interest you to know that his name Xitha'ska should more correctly be translated as, "Albino Eagle", or an Eagle that was un-naturally all white, a very special and rare bird.

Historian, is this where White Eagle, OK got the name?

Also, from the same place Historian found the pictures, a delegation photo from 1914 including a few of the already pictured.

Yes...the community of White Eagle, Oklahoma near Ponca City is named after Chief White Eagle, shown below.
