1 str8 dancer and 10 northern
Here in Utah we have less than a handful of straight dancers. Usually only one will be in attendance at a powwow and will be group in with all the Northern traditional dancers.
This weekend a "duck and dive" song was the second song. The straight dancer danced it very "straight" and did not do the ducks and dives. Have you seen straight dancers put in this situation and, if so, what did they do? |

redsky, In the evolution of powwows, this was bound to occur. In areas where there are either few straight dancers or few traditional dancers, both experience and learn the traditions of where they are at. For instance, I have been to Crow Fair when one of the first straight dancers from Oklahoma (Osage) had to dance with the traditional dancers to a sneak up song. . . when he had never heard a sneak up song before. I have also been to a man-dance/Inlon'ska on a Saturday night when a traditional dancer (Lakota) got up to dance and they sang extremely fast songs (the same ones used in men's fancy dance contests). Both times the dancers had a bewildered look like "What the ****! What do I do?" In fact both scenerios were quite comical! But, mark my words. Dancers adopt after participating in other powwow ways just one time . . .

I think the most adaptable dancer has to be Ben Wolf (Kiowa) of Long Beach, CA. A few Southern California powwows during the early 90's had Southern Straight and Northern Traditional combined. Ben Wolf pretty much always placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd even though he would sometimes be the only Straight dancer in the group.
