"Champions pow wow"?

What constitutes the name "champions" pow wow? Is there an actual criteria, or is it just an arbitrary name by the organizers? I've seen several with that tacked onto the name.

It's usually just a way of blowing their own horn but it generally means they put up a lot of contest money to draw in the best dancers (who tend to win wherever they go, hence are referred to as champion dancers). For example the Schemitzun "Feast of Green Corn and Dance" Powwow has been considered by many to be the national championship with regard to dancing and singing contests, but not by everyone universally of course. Today there are other powwows offering larger prize payouts and that attract larger numbers of dancers, too; some have spoken of them as "rivaling Schemitzun for championship status" but I dunno. I'd be swayed to think it's an arbitrary title most of the time it is used. Just my 2c...

Grand River "Champion of Champions" powwow.

Whoever accumulates the most points of all the category winners is awarded the "Champion of Champions" trophy.

Thanks for the info, that's kind of what I figured. As you cruise through the pow wow calender, the name "champions" just seems to be randomly tacked onto some of the names. I've been to a few, and they didn't seem any different than any other pow wow, but then, I'm obviously not a dancer, so wasn't sure.

Mandaree is having a similar contest. The champion gets a car. All the adult champions dance off for it.
