Outdoor pow wows

I seem to remember as a child growing up in Oklahoma, there were many more pow wows held outdoors than there is these days. Is that the case, or is my memory screwed up. Not that I don't enjoy all pow wows, but it just feels good to be outside in the fresh air and sunshine (or moonshine, as the case may be). I'm sure the dancers prefer the luxury of A/C, but it seems more spiritual with trees, grass, etc around as a setting. Are outdoor pow wows a dying animal?

I'm sorry but I have to disagree. I was just thinking to myself last night that I want to buy a camper for the powwow season because I haven't been camping near as much as I used to at all the outdoor powwows. I regularly go to powwows in oklahoma and almost all of them are outdoor events. I can think of 7 off the top of my head that have always been outdoors and will probably always be outdoors: Copan, Quapaw, Stroud, otoe,Skiatook, Ponca and StandingBear. There was alot of rain last year that forced some powwows to find indoor locations but that's not the norm. I can only think of 3 that are indoors: Red Earth (always been indoors), IICOT and Tulsa (recently moved indoors).

I couldn't be happier for you to disagree! In fact I was hoping someone would. I've just noticed on the calender lately everything saying "such and such arena" or "such and such gym", or "such and such convention center". Looks like I need to look a little harder, and I need to hit the 'ol I-35 back north to the lands of my youth! I feel a roadtrip coming on!

I like both outdoor and indoor powwows, just as long as is a powwow!

amarie,

I really miss the Ol' Tulsa Powwow at Mohawk Park. I used to travel from my homestate every year to be there (and the rockhouse) *L

Thanks!!

Thanks for the info. I've been researching the names you all have listed here for dates both on this site's calender and others. Is Thunderbird in Anadarko? Can't seem to find that one. And it looks like Concho, and Bell are scheduled for the same weekend? Is that right? Sac & Fox in Stroud looks like a really big one. So many, so little time.

And then there's Wichita Tribes Annual weekend after the Indian Expo.
