Question Raising fist at grand entry?

Hi everybody, I have a quick question

I've noticed at powwows, there are sometimes people who raise a fist in the air towards the cirlce during grand entry and some dances. What does this signify? I've been told that it is imagining that you are holding an eagle feather, and raising it towards the cirlce in respect. Is this the reason?

Thanks a lot!

The only time I raise my fist in the air is to curse the New England Patriots.

Things that make you say Hmmmn. Just kidding
It does make you wonder where people come up with this stuff
I would think someone is just getting into the mood, maybe getting a little excited about the doings. Honestly, I don't know why they would raise a fist. Makes me think of that old "Billy Jack" movie, the one where he was being led away in the squad car after his standoff with the authorities.

the best i can tell you is that it may draw back to 68 olympics and the fist raising there. black atheletes raised a blck gloved fist while on the podeum in a display of civil rights solidarity of sorts, a symbol of 'black power'. that and the olympic commitee/stewards told them not to.
for the most part i think its a case of monkey see monkey do. someone saw it done and played along without finding out why. and then had to come up with a reason why they were doing it.

take google for a spin and look up the 68 olympics and 'black gloved fist' for better information.

Betcha someone did that so their Granny would see them in the grand entry line and now people think there was a spiritual reason behind it.

Not quite the authoritative source I'd like to see

If you look in the background of this one, there is a grand entry taking place, and I didn't see any fists in the air. I'm betting that this is more common out there on the well paved powwow trail.

You put your right fist in.
You take your right fist out.
You put your right fist in,
and you shake it all about.
You do the NDN Hokey Pokey,
and you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about!

Nah, probably not.
