an apology and a thank you

I am Irish-American with one Native grandmother. I want to apologize for the disrespectful behavior of some white people at PowWows.

I've witnessed clapping and stomping because grand entry was ten minutes late. I've told white people to stop talking and laughing during the Native Anthem. Many take photos without permission. Some disrespect the dance circle. Others touch regalia without permission.

All of this is inexcusable.

I also want to thank you all for keeping your traditions alive. We need Native wisdom now more than ever.

My Irish Clan suffered many of the same injustices as Native Americans. Our language was outlawed, our people slaughtered, starved, and eventually forced off our land.

My starving grandfather arrived here in 1849. The land that fed him was Indian land. My family, and my lost country, continue to be grateful to Native Americans (although saddened by the horrible history we share).

Us americans in general are disrespectful, greedy people. I have a few friends from other countries who say so also. We hang out and talk about the differences between us and them.

damn shame.

I guess thats what happens when people take the words FREE COUNTRY a little to literally.
