Pow-wows near NYC

Hi everyone!

I've never been to a pow-wow, but I'd like to attend one. Can anyone recommend a good one within a few hours drive of New York City within the next couple of months.

Also, since I'm just a spectator, do I need to dress in any special way, or will I be fine in jeans t-shirt and sneakers? And is there any thing else I need to know to avoid breaching ettiquette?

Hi Martin, I'm not from up that way so I don't really know the good powwows to attend. However, there is a powwows calendar here on the site where you can search by location and date to try to find something nearby.

Thanks, Hobbs.

I tried the search, and the only thing I found coming up soon was this: The Coyote Clan Powwows

I went to the website and they didn't have pics of anyone dancing. It looked like everyone was just hanging out and socializing. Has anyone ever been to one of their powwows, and if so, how was it?

Ok, Martin, might try this then. The Nation Musuem of the American Indian George Gustav Heye Center is in NYC (National Museum of the American Indian) there *might* be someone there who might know of some dances. The other thing to look for might be some tribal NDN centers/offices/casinos in the area, they might know of some dances.

Then again, I know that we've got some PWs.com'ers who are from New York. They might also be able to help out!

If you bring kids, don't let them run across the arena. Take your hat off during grand entry. Stand up during the honor songs. If you want to stand around the singers while they're singing, do not show emotion, do not tap your feet, do not even bounce.

Martin,

I have just visited the American Indian Community House in NYC. They seem to have a good grasp of community events in the NYC area.

I would suggest contacting them for powwow information.

That is an awesome website! There used to be more pics, I printed one out to hang at my desk once!

Yeah, stay away from THOSE powwows.

If you are in the NYC area, I would try NMAI, the Community House, Red Hawk Indian Arts.

There are a few in the area like Sussex NJ, Gateway in NY, Hunter Mt? Bear Mt State Park, Budd Lake NJ, Ramapo NJ...

They all usually show up on the calendar here.

nyc powwows

If you are looking for fall/winter powwows ,there really isn't much in this area. The Thunderbird Dancers have a monthly powwow, but check The American Indian Community House website for dates.
