Hi, everyone!
I'm new to the board (obviously, LOL), and I'm hoping to learn a lot. I'm a college student (soon to be graduate - yay!) from Indiana. I'm not Native (I'm black), but I'm very intrigued with the culture. I don't mean this in a I'm-trying-to-be-Native way.Not to blab on, but in 2000 this performing arts youth group I was in (we also did community service) traveled to the Pine Ridge Reservation in SD. We got to volunteer at this school (Treehaven Institute) for 3 days and hangout with the children and the teens our age (I was almost 16). We went into one of the neighborhoods and performed for the residents. We stay for like two hours after the performance just talking to the neighborhood and meeting the people. I think we were all so overwhelmed with how genuinely welcoming everyone was. To get the point, it was a very eye-opening experience. Actually, one of the Lakota girls from the school kind of latched on to our group and traveled around the reservation with us, and became a real friend. It was one of those experiences that you don't realize affected you until years later. A few of my friends and I were crying when we had to leave, seriously, and once I graduate (traveling money is nonexistent right now), I want to visit and volunteer on other reservations. So if anyone has any advice, warnings, info on that, I'm completely open. I'm also hoping to go to at least one Pow Wow this summer. Sorry for the long post, I can be a bit wordy, Jamimi |

Hi Jamimi! Welcome to powwows.com! I expect that you'll have a learning experience here that you'll find fun and sometimes frustrating. It's really a good community here that enjoy pushing each other and poking at each other too

Sweet! I'm a Circle City girl myself--go Colts!--but I have friends at Purdue. Thanks for the welcome!
