i was at a pow wow over th summer, doing ht usuak stuff. there was an incident that was on one level insutling to me. i had taken a few shots of a a dancer that was really good. i had asked before taking the shots and showed him on the screen of the digital cam. this older man came over ot me and said something to the effect of i was not allowed to take photos of anyone there and particularly during a certain song. there was no songs or ceremonies or aything going on in the arena. this older guy as far as far as i could tell was not native at all! the dancer i took the photo of actually had words with the older man and then went to the head staff about him.

what do you think?

Some old people can be asses too native or not. Everyone is not an elder.

well he must not have realized you had actually asked the dancer.
Obviously a missunderstanding... or maybe he didn't want HIS picture taken...
I wouldn't worry about too much.

yeah you did what yuo were supposed to do. Mostly we don't want pics without permission, especially of our kids.

Some ppl just want to pick a fight & look big, & I agree old does not mean elder.

I once had an incident with an old person who was not an elder (first clue was that they were tellin everyone they were...lol). I politely walked away & went to an elder with the problem this person was causing me. Not easy to do, I can be a bit of a hothead when someone ticks me off.

i agree. there are folks who say they are elders but really are not. they fell that they are old that automaticaly makes them elders. what i feel is an elder is someone who has wisdom to share, not an opinion, and experience to teach.

quite possibel that where he is from there are no photos taken while dancers are in or near the arena at all. other areas, its ok, so long as the mc's say otherwise.
