Pow Wow Dancing

Yo, this is my first post on this site, or any site for that matter. I was wondering if anyone here knew any place where I could learn any Pow Wow dancing styles. Thanks for any help.

Hi Grey Wolf,
I live in Louisiana also, but way too far south for us to get together. I have two suggestions for you. One, the most obvious, is to go to powwows. Watch, listen and ask questions.

The second is obtaining a couple of instructional DVDs that are very good for the beginner. The first DVD is called Beginning Steps. It breaks down the basic dance step and is very good at teaching to dance in time with the drum. It also has a section on Northern and Southern drums and the song structures of each. The second DVD is called Dance Styles. It showcases each style of mens and womens powwow dance including the social dances. Also an excellant DVD for the beginner. Both can be purchased at www.writtenheritage.com .

Just remembered, there is a third DVD called Into the Circle that has some good powwow information. Hope this helps.
