What can non-Native Americans wear?
What if a non- Native American person is in support to the cause and history of Native Americans, but is in now way a Native? What are they permitted to wear (clothes, facepaint, jewelry, etc.)? I couldn't find any info on this... I'm kind of new.

This can be a little more complicated than meets the eye. But, I'll try. MOST of the dance clothes you see at a powwow, that is open to the public, would probably be OK for you to wear. There are exceptions. And the best way to learn what those exceptions are would be to talk to the dancers at the powwows you attend. Avoid facepaint but just about any jewelery would be OK.
Before you start throwing together a bunch of regalia, do a bunch of research. It usually takes me as much time to research the proper way to make an item as it does to actually make it. If you're going to do it, do it right. Attend some powwows and pick a style of dance that you like. You may also want to get some "dance style" videos from www.writtenheritage.com or www.crazycrow.com. Once you know your style, then you can better find out which items are appropriate to the style and which items you should not wear. Hope this helps. Feel free to write back or PM me if you have any more questions. Ron |

Street clothes. Jeans, normal cut shorts, t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. Nothing revealing, or offensive (when in doubt, leave it out!)
