New to Pow Wows looking for a Cherokee friend for help

Hello. I'm new to powwows. I'm part Cherokee, and it's so far back in the line that I don't have any family to look to for help. I've made a shawl, and danced during inter-tribals for the first time last weekend... but I want to learn/do more. I've been to crazycrow.com and ordered patterns for dresses and stuff. But I don't know what regalia I should be wearing. I don't want to look like a moron, nor do I want to do the wrong thing. I would like to at one point have full regaila to dance in. I'm also interested in learning more about dancing. I would love to fancy shawl dance, but I see that more in the future (I have two left feet and no beat.)

I'm looking for someone who is Cherokee who can help me learn what to wear, and what not to wear. Colors to wear, etc. and maybe even at some point how to do the dances. I'm not looking to enter contests or anything, just be more than sitting in the chair the whole time watching.

Can anyone help?
Thanks!
Leilani

Uh nope not the way to go about this. You can't just get up and start contesting (dance) alot of us were raised ndn and some of ndn's who never raised it learned about their tribe years and years in advance before even entering the circle. Best bet go to OK and learn about your tribe and their community dances. Keep an open mind and particiapate in your community as much as you can. Tribal colors and such you will learn as you go when you participate in your community. Then after a good couple of years depending on when you are ready you can start dancing. Just have patience and slow down.Good things will come your way .

Hey there Neede, I hope and pray that all is well with you and your family.

I believe that you will find most Cherokees are more than willing to say welcome. O Si Yo.

I think, too, that you should take things slowly. You should sist back and watch , listen and learn. Make some friends, hopefully of many skins, and just move into the scene sslloowwllyy. Learn our ways of thinking and speaking. Learn the history, our history is very colorful and great. learn some phrases in Cherokee. Keep your head up, learn what it means to be NDN or at least Cherokee.

You could learn that the Cherokee ladies look very nice in the teardrop dress with their little aprons. I think you may find that a pastel(spl?) blue is a nice peaceful color. Use different blues in combination. I think you might be able to find a pattern from Crazy-Crow or some other such retail organization. Try to find the Missouri River pattern packet. Make it to fit you. Try to find some one NDN in the know to help you with some of the particulars. WaDo for for trying and wanting to learn and participate. Just be causcious who you associate with and watch others to discern the wierdos from the real thing.

Good luck and have a very nice day. Stay warm.

Dang...how many more of you guys out there were trying to figure out what an "oloft" was? The first poster's screenname reads needmorezoloft...before it hit me, I first read it "Need mo' rez oloft" LOL

Being in Texas, you're not far at all from Oklahoma and lots and lots of pow wows. Go to pow wows for awhile and meet and talk with as many fancy shawl dancers as you can. The more you know before you start making your outfit, the better you'll be. Making stuff before you know what you're doing will prove frustrating at best I would imagine. Also, once you start making your stuff, I'd start training as it'll take you awhile to build up your stamina.

Good luck.
