Something new but old

I have been tooling around here for some time (like 2 years now) and today I finally regestered.

According to my mother I am part native. I learned of this near her death. I have no idea what tribe. My grandfather on my mothers side married a native woman. I also married a part native woman. At my wedding my grandmother told me that I was just like my grandfather. I didnt know what she was talking about untill 3 years ago when my mother passed.

My grandparents use to take us kids to powwows and never said anything except it was a fun place to be. They would just sit at the edge of the circle and just watch and smile a lot at the dancers in the circle. They had special chairs that my grandfather made by hand. I wish I had one now.

I am now looking for the native ties. The family tree from my grandmother seems to stop just after her birth. We cannot find any record of her birth. No one in the family recalls my grandmother speaking of any brothers or sisters so I guess she was an only child. I also recall her talking of a boarding school that she attended that she hated. I assumme it was one of those schools where native children were carted off to to become a valued citizen so to speak. So that is where I am at. Sooner or later I will fine the records.

My wife dances the circle and I made a promise to her to seek out my native heritage. I love going to powwows. I get excited whenever we decide to go. I find them before my wife does most of the time. She then looks at the powwow and says yea or nay to the powwow. My wife has taught me the do-s and dont-s in her tribes way and it seems to work fine for me.

The one thing I have notice about powwows is that there is a big difference between eastern and western powwows. I like the ones out west much better. They seem to have a friendly feeling to me.

Thanks for listening to me ramble on.
