Courage? Low IQ? Mistake?
Have a very good day! Hey hello to all! Hope you don't mind this thread's title.
And you could think 'not one more of those...', but: What do you think? Just post or pm your point of view. Thanx I am German, and I've got a strange problem. Some Germans point at me because -I don't dare to write this, but you will know sooner or later -one of my great-grannies was a native American. And I seem to look similar. I don't know, I don't know her, and I heard of this one year ago. (Hidden because of Nazis, Hitler, misunderstandings, trouble,...) A friend recommended not to talk about this. Must I be ashamed? Am I a fake(?)??? Must I be proud? I really knew nearly nothing about NDNs. Now I seriously started to learn more. Maybe there is only one drop of NDN blood in my German body and my German brain. Do I have to be attacked for it? By Germans? By Indians? By both?? What for? I loved all sorts of chokers without knowing their meaning. I was recommended not to wear them any more. Now I leave them at home, for I don't want to be respectless. My hair is colored black and will be black forever! (Naturally brown.) Does this make me a fake? I was told only to watch... but I wanted to know more of you NDNs, ... what can I learn about your thinking without asking questions, without making mistakes, without learning because of my mistakes? The only thing I dont want is to be inpolite or respectless. But for I don't know the answers before I'm pointing out my questions, I could seem to be like that. I don't hope so. I am a foreigner, and NDN culture is new to me. Do you know 'WINNETOU' ;-). May be full of prejudices, but all Germans like it! So I think I have to 'jump over my own shadow' and have a little bit of courage. Can you give me some good advice? Last edited by indian-heart-beat; 03-23-2006 at 08:23 PM. Reason: some good advice |

I always wondered about that. During the war, many native people served in the Armed Forces. After being away from home for some time, you can bet that they got horny sometimes. They probly went out and themselfs some while "over there". I don't know. Maybe they unknowingly left something behind.
Dam horny Indians. Aye! |

Hey, thank you for posting!!!
I haven't got a real proof, only what my great-aunt told me and a copy of a picture with my great-granny among her German family in Germany. It is said, her husband was a teacher. And when German settlers went to Virginia and further to find gold or to be busy with the railways, he accompanied them and was their teacher. There were a lot 'Fecke'-people, but he returned to Germany-with a native woman. I still don't know which tribe she was from, and I think I will never find out more than I know up to now. My cousin had looked for information about her long time ago. By chance, I read some of his threads in ancestry or generology forums or something. I'd really like to know more. Anyway- would it change my education? Maybe it changed my life, for now I am more interested in Indian culture ... than I think I were without my great-granny. I surfed through the net and still am not sure if what I found out is really true or not. Now I am here at powwows.com and I think here nobody needs to tell me a lie. Have a really good evening! And thanx a lot! Last edited by indian-heart-beat; 03-23-2006 at 08:25 PM. Reason: some more good advice |

And what I have written about German internet sites: It is all true! Orthopaedian (?) descriptions of several races. The other posts appeared more than a day after I posted them. I thaught, they would never come here, so I tried it two more times... I didn't want to make anyone angry or to be inpolite. Yes, I've got a sense of humor. The only problem I've got is a language problem because this is not my language. If I made a mistake (or more of them), I am really sorry. I am still learning. Again: Thank you for that hint. |

You have no reason to be ashamed of being "part German" here, nor being "part American Indian" amongst your neighbors. While some people like to jeer out of a sense of rivalry (or racism), no reasonable and mature person would blame "all Germans" for Hitler and his regime nor would they blame "all whites" of today for the wrongs done to our nations and tribes.
However, the detailed analytical comparison of your physiology with that of subjects whom you may "weird people out" (make them feel ackward and uncomfortable). That and the name you gave the thread "Courage? Low IQ? Mistake?" might be part of the reason for the low volume of responses and comments. Another reason is the subject of "white people at powwows/white people wanting to be Indian/mostly white people just discovering they are also a little bit Indian" and "what they should do/what should be done about them" is indeed a very old subject that has been quite worn out! Sorry, it's just that way. It is good that you wish to learn more of the Native American portion of your multifaceted heritage. But I think the cultures, ceremonies, beliefs, songs, traditional attire and other social nuances within Native American societies is tied not only to our heritage but also to OUR LAND. You reside in Deutchland and the culture developed for your by your ancestors was probably handed to them by the Spirits who have influence in YOUR LAND. So I would only request and humbly caution you not to go chasing after "living the part" of your one Indian ancestor. Even with the noblest of motivations and utmost respect, doing so can easily be taken as unrespect and mockery of Native culture and possibly the flippant disregard of your proud German heritage. Be proud of who you are. And proudly BE who you are. |

Wakalapi,
thank you so much for your answer! You are right. Yes. I am not going to be an Indian.I am only interested in powwows and I am going to GONations next month! I want to be prepared and want to get to know Indians better, not by reading lies or surfing in internet. As I said, you can find true or false answers there (like I wrote I did when I was writing about the site I found with arms, legs, nose,...I didn't want to be inpolite, it was an example. I see-not a good one.) I love music, dance, culture (there is no German culture). Music and dance are parts of my profession. And I am strictly against prejudice. One more reason to find out more. I won't try to find out any secrets or be a fake. No! I am a friend. Yes! And I have to learn this language better for less misunderstandings. I am learning. Thank you very much. Now I can understand some things better. I will edit my first post. |

I don't know how to start the best way. I am playing games, too for more vocabulary - maybe slang - and just for fun. I definitely want to learn more about several tribes. I read some books like The Wind Is My Mother (Bear Heart), I burned a book written by Sun Bear, I've read 'Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee' but I didn't read it out yet- too sad for me at this time. I've got DVDs like '500 Nations' with Kevin Costner and 'Indianer Nordamerikas', Encyclopedia Of Native American Tribes,... but it is still all not clear to me. Because of my ancestry I'd love to find out the tribe where my great-granny came from. Only knowing some more details would make me happy. How can this all be hidden! I don't want her to be hidden. First I'd like to know more about Zuni, Navajo and Jicarilla. Thank you for your answer and for your question. Thanx a lot. |

Remember that courage breeds courage. Sure sometimes the little courage babies are b*stards but perhaps by your standing up for yourself and your bloodline others will be inspired to do the same (that or they'll beat the crap out of you...(laugh)) but that's just the chances we all take when we chose to live rather than merely to exist in this world. There are those on this very board who spew endlessly about what makes a "real" Indian, about genetics being null and void when compared to their grandiose sense of importance. I say you were made the way you were meant to be made. Embrace it. You'll be much happier in the end than you are now, being a shell of who you are and want to be. Been in the same boat you are in as to mixed heritage. So long as the boat continues to float, I have a good paddle, fishing rod and a rifle, I'm fine....Good luck to you. Just a small tip.....
Do you have any birth, or death records for her? on that it should say where she was and a name and may lead you to a tribe, you may even consider looking in to exactly where they met she may of been from there and get a "idea" of what tribe from her location. hope this makes sence and helps.
