I have seen this many times lately at some southern powwows. It is done after the powwow closes for the day. I was wondering if anyone could give me some info on this. Whatis it? Why do it? Men and Women?

I'm not sure where you are but I'll give a very brief short version, or at least try.

Stomp dancing is a ceremonial for most. I was taught that Stomp dance should start after sundown and end at or before sunrise.

Men are the leaders, the women are the shell shakers.

for us southeastern tribes this is a ceremonial dance but here in oklahoma alot of other tribes have adopted it as a social dance and at some pow wows here in oklahoma it is done just for fun and some also have a contest for it

I was once told that most of the tribes east of the mississippi had some form of stomp dancing. Yes it is ceremonial for us...but at the same time, very much social as well. Many tribes today still dance in this manner: Creek, Cherokee, Seminole, Yuchi, Shawnee, Delaware, Keetowah, and Miccousuke. It is for everyone, so next time you attend...feel free do jump right on in. There are around 20 grounds in Oklahoma, 1 in North Carolina, 1 in Alabama, and a few in Florida. All of which have ceremonial dances throughout the year. the ones you see at powwows are strictly social, and are put on usually by the powwow comittees.

I am Lower Creek(Muskogee).We have four ceremonies a year plus a stick ball game. Berry or Arbor: represents the North.It is now spring time. Berry is held at the new moon after the last frost and is considered the end of the year. This year it will be held March 25.Green corn is the next ceremony.It represents the east.The date of this ceremony is always on the new moon after the corn ripens on the stalk.The Green Corn is the beginning of the new year for Muskogee people.Litttle Green Corn :represents the south.This ceremony is always two moons after Green Corn.Last is The Ceremony of the Harvest:represents the west.It is always the new moon after the first frost.This is just a alittle about each ceremony there is a lot more.This is from our(The Lower Muskogee Creek Tribe) Muskogee History Seminar book.

Oh yea we do social stomps as well.We usually do our social stomps at the social stomp dance grounds.We do our ceremonies on our ceremony grounds.Anyone is allowed to stomp social with us.
